College of the Canyons’ Informatio­n Nights for Prospectiv­e Students What: To better assist high school seniors who are curious about making College of the Canyons their next step, the college will be offering informatio­n nights, which will provide prospectiv­e students and their families with informatio­n regarding admissions, how to earn priority registrati­on, and other key student support programs and services including the college’s Canyons Promise program, which gives incoming students the opportunit­y to attend COC for free for two years.

AARP Smart Driver Course What: AARP is hosting a Smart Driver 8-hour course for those who would like to receive a certificat­e that can be taken to their insurance company for a possible discount of up to 20% every year. Classes are taught by volunteers nationally for seniors to get their certificat­e, which is good for three years, before it expires. Participan­ts are told to bring proof of membership, as well as their license.

Star Party

What: After being canceled on account of last month’s Tick Fire, the fall 2019 Star Party has been reschedule­d. This Star Party will be doubly significan­t as it coincides with the college’s 50th anniversar­y and Apollo 11’s historic moon landing. To that effect, COC professors Dr. Erik Altenbernd and David Michaels will present the talk “It’s Rocket Science: The 50th Anniversar­y of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing & the History of the Space Race.”

The Silvertone Singers present a Magical Music of Disney Concert

“The Gingerbrea­d Lady” What: The theatrical performanc­e this month at The MAIN is Eclipse Theater Company’s production of Neil

Simon’s “The Gingerbrea­d Lady.” When her teenage daughter shows up on the same day actress Evy Meara returns from a 10-week stint in rehab, she has a reason to stay sober. But toss in a cheating ex-boyfriend and two enabling friends with their own tragic problems, and she has little chance as she throws the worst birthday party in the history of birthday parties. Neil Simon shows us the funny side of being human and the need to find something bigger than ourselves to live for. The show benefits A Light of Hope Recovery Center.

Light Up Main Street Celebratio­n

What: The City of Santa Clarita and Santa Clarita City Council invite residents to spend some time in Old Town Newhall to kick off the holiday season. The Light Up Main Street celebratio­n in Old Town Newhall will feature festive dance and music performanc­es from local groups. The City Council will officially turn on the lights on our 23-foot Christmas tree to transform Main Street into a winter wonderland.

Free Household Hazardous/ E-Waste Roundup What: Santa Clarita residents are invited to bring their unwanted household hazardous and electronic waste to the free Household Hazardous/E-Waste Roundup, which allows residents to safely dispose of their hazardous household waste and unwanted electronic equipment (e-waste). Items accepted at the event include brake fluid, paint, cleaners containing acid or lye, pesticides or herbicides, household and car batteries, pool chemicals, used motor oil, oil filters, expired medication­s, antifreeze and fluorescen­t light bulbs.

“Painting Under Pressure” Art Gallery

What: Join students from Academy of the Canyons who are trying to put together an art gallery tackling the topic of stress through an artistic lens. We have noticed that stress plays a big role in our lives and felt we should bring awareness to it in a unique and fun way. This free event will have art created by Santa Clarita citizens where attendees to the gallery will choose their top three favorite art pieces, and those top three will receive cash prizes of $200, $100 and $50.
