New Stadium And Race Track

-

Work begins this week on a race track and stadium at the Baker Ranch a mile east of Saugus. Bob Anderson is the moving spirit and stated that the “track will be onequarter of a mile, but will be built wide and heavily banked at the turns, making it equal to a straight track with the additional advantage that every bit of the races can be plainly seen from the large stadium that will be constructed.

Races will be planned for every Sunday afternoon during the racing season, and it is planned to make the attractions so that nationally known horses and horsemen will be seen in competition. The work will be hurried to completion as fast as possible.

With Mr. Anderson’s experience as race and rodeo manager, the sport loving public are sure to find good entertainment at these meets.

That Paving

Some have wondered at the delay in the proposed paving of Spruce Street, known as the Boulevard.

An explanation of the matter is reported, being that the State refuses to share in the expense unless the street is widened to full 80 feet. The further statement is credited to the authorities that unless the street is widened, another route must eventually be found for boulevard travel.

Considerable speculation is indulged in as to just how the widening can be accomplished. If done, it is probable that the widening will be on one side.

Rainfall Makes Big Record

The rain which attained such size Wednesday of last week left a record of 2.95 inches of water. Owing to the long period of dry weather, most of the water went into the ground, On Friday, or rather during Thursday night it began again, gently at first, and kept it up until almost dark on Friday, adding 2.49 inches to the record. Most of this also soaked the ground, tho at times the fall became very heavy. This rain gives excellent prospect for good crops next year, as these rains will give opportunity for getting in grain early, and will make an excellent growing season of the early months.

A wet winter is predicted — but you never can tell.

Roscoe Easy

The Newhall-Saugus Athletics entirely outclassed the Roscoe team Sunday afternoon, winning easily with a 7 to 1 score. The visitors scored only once, in the second, when they got two hits. The rest were blanks for them, only one more hit being allowed by Montgomery.

The locals hit Smith for nine safe ones, netting seven runs, errors helping them. Fifteen men failed to guess where Montgomery threw them while Smith only got six. The visitors only got two balls outside the diamond, both of which were caught.

As now constituted, the home club clearly outclasses the teams in the league.
