Santa Clarita has landed a spot on an awards list recognizing cities and counties in California for creative and cost-efficient projects aimed at improving streets, roads and bridges.

The League of California Cities, County Engineers Association of California and the California State Association of Counties announced Wednesday the winners of its 2020 Outstanding Local Streets and Roads Project Awards.

“The projects serve as important reminders of the innovation in sustainability happening on a local level to improve safety and accessibility to roadways for residents in a way that is responsible and can be replicated across the state and nation,” League Public Works President Rene Guerrero, the Pomona Public Works director, wrote in a prepared statement.

Among Santa Barbara and Yuba counties and cities like Santa Cruz and Hayward, Santa Clarita was recognized for its GiveMeGreen! app, which allows bicyclists to be detected as they approach an intersection along busy traffic corridors to improve safety and decrease congestion, under the safety or intelligent transportation system projects category.

“The city of Santa Clarita is always looking for innovative and cost-effective solutions to enhance roadway safety and improve traffic flow,” said Cesar Romo, a traffic signal system administrator with the city. “(The GiveMeGreen! bicycle detection system) is the first system of its kind providing a creative solution for detecting bicyclists.”
