SCV motorcycle deputies announce traffic operation
In recognition of May being Motorcycle Awareness Month, the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station is planning a traffic enforcement operation Thursday, according to an announcement by station officials.
The deputies will be looking primarily for violations from drivers and motorcyclists that increase the risk of a collision or crash, according to a news release sent out by Deputy Natalie Arriaga, spokeswoman for the SCV Sheriff’s Station. The operation is being funded by a federal grant through the Office of Traffic Safety.
“The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department encourages drivers and riders to share the road,” according to an alert by the Sheriff’s Station announcing the operation. “The top primary crash factors for motorcycles are unsafe speed, improper turning, right-ofway violations, driving under the influence and unsafe lane changes. Speeding is the most common, accounting for nearly a third of all crashes in the state.”
Station deputies also sought to remind drivers that motorcyclists “have the same rights and privileges as any other motor vehicle operating on our roads but can easily be hidden in our blind spots,” according to the release. “Help keep motorcyclists safe by always taking an extra moment to look for motorcycles before changing lanes, and always keep a safe distance between you and a motorcyclist.”
All motorcycle riders, regardless of skill level, are encouraged to enroll in the California Motorcyclist Safety Program, according to the LASD. Information and training locations are available at californiamotor-cyclist.com or by calling 1-877 RIDE-411 (1-877-743-3411).
