Amity Heritage Society’s 2016 Calendar.

View the township through the years in photographs

- By Nancy L.S. Kauffman

Amity Heritage Society’s 2016 calendar depicts life in Amity Township through the years in photographs.

This is the fourth year that the society has released a calendar. The majority of the photos in the calendar are from original glass negatives from the Kate Ehrgood collection. Kate Ehrgood was a photographer and a single mom in the 1900s, and she used her photography skills to take pictures in order to earn a living for her and her son. The glass negatives were stored in an old locked barn building owned by the Barto family, of Amity Twp.

In 2007, Ron Barto, who was moving out of the area, invited the Amity Heritage Society to take a look in the building. What they found was over four gen- erations of photos. Berks County Historian George M. Meiser IX generously volunteered his time to enhance the photos.

The calendar is $10 and proceeds go towards the maintenance of the Amity Heritage Society’s building, located on Rt. 422. The calendars are now available and may be purchased at: Manatawny Creek Winery, Boyer’s Market & Catering-Amity Township location, Amity Township Municipal Building, Gently Used Books, Cedar Hill Florists, Daniel Boone Homestead, Boone Area Library, McGrath’s Automotive Garage, Yellow House Hotel, Historic Brinton Lodge/ Hidden River Brewery, and through Amity Heritage Society.
