Amity police arrested a man Wednesday, Dec. 16, they allege is responsible for a burglary at a township restaurant.

Police arrested Elwood Gladney, 59, of Walnut Street, Pottstown, after an investigation into a theft and burglaries led them to suspect his involvement, according to court documents.

At around 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 10, Amity Police were called to Island Pizza, 3060 Limekiln Road, for a burglary that had been discovered. An employee stated that she arrived for work and saw a broken window beside the right front door to the restaurant, po-

lice said. The left front door had also been open and the window to the door had been broken as well.

Police checked the inside of the building and found that the cash register had been pulled off the counter and onto the floor. Nothing was taken, according to court documents. Officers viewed surveillance video of the restaurant that showed a white male possibly in his 50’s wearing glasses, a knit hat and a large coat entering the bar area. The video shows the man grabbing the cash register, pulling it to the ground and running out of the building, police said.

Officers later learned that several businesses in the tri-county area had also been burglarized.

On Dec. 16, police received another call for a reported theft at Cabin Fever Auctions, 1860 Weavertown Road, at around 9:15 a.m. When police arrived at the scene, the owner stated that he was missing money and that one of his employees, later identified as Gladney, matched the picture of the burglary suspect pictured from a recent burglary he saw on the internet, police said. Police then spoke with Gladney and positively identified him as the subject in the security video from Island Pizza.

A joint investigation into burglaries at about 20 different businesses in areas including Exeter, West Vincent, East Pikeland, Upper Uwchlan and New Hanover is continuing, according to Amity Police.

Gladney is being charged with burglary, criminal mischief and criminal trespassing. He was arraigned on Dec. 16 before District Judge Ann L. Young and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Dec. 23 before District Judge Victor M. Frederick IV. He was unable to post the set $25,000 cash bail and is being held at Berks County Prison.
