The fifth annual Amity Calamity tennis tournament was held on Friday, May 27, at the Daniel Boone Middle School courts. The outing is held to promote tennis in a friendly and inviting atmosphere. The tournament included 20 players who faced off against each other in a round robin, doubles format. Teams were made up of girls and boys – some current and some former Daniel Boone students. Players ranged in age from 11 to 21.

In this year’s clash, teams were paired and had ten minutes to win as many points as possible in the round.

After two hours, the round robin was completed and the four teams with the most points played semifinal matches. For this, standard sets were played to determine the finalists.

The four semifinals pitted former Boone standout Kyle Jones and Mike Owens against Cooper Duffie and Cole Reinert. Riding the strength of Reinert’s deep well-placed groundstrokes Duffie and Reinert advanced to the finals.

In the other semifinal, drama unfolded as two sets of brothers, Greg and Owen Blume, squared off against Carter and Griffin Adams in a battle royal. The match was a see-saw affair with multiple lead changes and close points that kept the fans and family glued to their seats.

On this day, the Blume brothers saw their run come to an end as neither had an answer for the booming forehands of Griffin Adams.

At age 11, Owen Blume became the youngest player to earn a medal in the tournament’s history.

In the finals, the stage was set as Boone tennis teammates Griffin Adams and Reinert squared off with their partners to see whowould be crowned this year’s champs. It was a match up worth waiting for since just one year ago Reinert and Adams teamed together to take the crown.

In the end, it was team Adams nudging ahead to stay, winning the finals by a score of 9-7.

Registration money was donated to Operation Backpack, a non profit-organization who gather and assemble food provisions for low-income area students.
