Jeffrey R. Boyer has been hired as the new superintendent of schools for the Antietam School District at an annual salary of $150,000.

The Antietam School Board made the appointment, effective Aug. 1, at its June 25 meeting.

“We are pleased to have secured Mr. Jeffrey Boyer as the new superintendent of schools,” board President S. Michelle Worrall said. “Mr. Boyer is an exemplary educational leader who serves as an advocate for students. He is a well-respected leader in the field of education and has articulated his commitment to serving the Antietam School District. The school board is confident that Mr. Boyer will successfully lead the Antietam School District as superintendent of schools in his new role.”

He replaces Melissa Brewer, who stepped down as superin-

tendent at the end of the school year in June.

Boyer is currently serving as the assistant superintendent at the Indiana Area School District in Indiana County, Pa., a position he has held since July 2014.

Boyer has extensive education experience as a math and computer science teacher, and building principal. Previously, he served as the director of education and junior high school principal at Somerset Area School District, junior-senior high school principal at Rockwood Area School District and as the assistant principal in the Conemaugh Valley and Clarion Limestone school districts.

Boyer possesses a collaborative leadership style balancing integrity of educational programming that supports long-term educational and financial interests while maintaining student-focused priorities, the school board stated in a press release announcing his hiring.

Boyer believes that constituent service is a very important part of his job as Antietam’s new superintendent and he looks forward to the opportunity to lead in the community, according to the board.

The Antietam School District encompasses approximately 5.3 square miles and is comprised of two municipalities: Mt. Penn Borough and Lower Alsace Township. There are three school buildings within the Antietam School District: Mount Penn Primary Center (Kindergarten and first grade), Mount Penn Elementary (grades two through six) and one Middle-Senior High School (grades seven through 12). Staff members consist of 98 professional staff, 74 support staff (30 full time, 44 part-time), and 10 administrative staff. The 2017-2018 general operating budget is approximately $19M.
