Grocery Outlet kicks off ‘Independence from Hunger’ campaign

-

Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, the nation’s fastest-growing, extreme-value grocery retailer, recently launched its Independence from Hunger Food Drive to combat food insecurity for the eighth consecutive year. Spanning from June 27 to July 31, 2018, the Shillington Grocery Outlet is teaming up with Mary’s Shelter and Mifflin Community Food Ministry and will be collecting donations throughout the entire duration of the campaign that will go directly to that partners.

During the summer months, many families lose access to school supported food programs, creating an increased risk for food insecurity. In fact, the most recent USDA data reports that over 41.2 million people live in food insecure households, including 12.9 million children (USDA, Household Food Security in the United States in 2016).

The USDA reports that one in every six Americans experiences food insecurity and 40.6 million Americans were reported as living at or below the poverty level in 2016 (U.S. Census Bureau, Income, Poverty and Health Insurance Coverage in the U.S. - Data collected in 2016 and released September 2017).
