Myers going the distance for Colgate

- By Bill Arsenault

Luke Myers is going the distance for the Colgate men’s cross country team.

Myers, from Mohnton, was a middle distance runner in his days at Governor Mifflin but the 5-foot-9, 145 pound junior has become one of the top performers with the Raiders this fall.

On Oct. 12, he led Colgate and finished 19th out of 81 runners at the Albany Invitational in Albany, N.Y. with an 8,000 meter time of 27:10.2. He had a seasonbest time of 27.00 for 8K when he was the Raiders’ second best runner at the Paul Short Run on Sept. 29 in Bethlehem. His careerbest 8K time is 26:53.6 set last fall.

Myers opened the season by finishing seventh at the Harry Lang Invitational on Sept. 1 with a 6,400 meter time of 22:22.7 on the home course in Hamilton, N.Y. and followed that up by being Colgate’s second best runner at the UB Stampede on Sept. 14 in Buffalo, N.Y. with an 8K time of 27:28.5.

“Luke came to Colgate cross country as an 800 meter runner,” coach Luke Burdick said. “Most 800 runners have difficulty stretching out to 5K in high school cross country.”

But as a freshman, the coaches had Myers running 8K and 10K distances.

“I remember that he struggled a bit that first year,” Burdick said. “But now he has turned into a strong distance runner. In the Albany meet, it was the first time since he’s been here that he was first on the team. It was well-deserved.”

Myers still competes in middle distance races in track.

“I believe if he keeps it up he will be one of our top runners in track as well and should be aiming for one or our middle distance school records in the future,” Burdick said.

The freshman was named Landmark Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 15 after keying the Susquehanna women’s soccer team to a pair of league victories the previous week. Werner scored at the 16:07 mark and it was the only goal as the River Hawks defeated Juniata 1-0 on Oct. 10 in Huntingdon. She had two goals, including the gamewinner, in a 4-1 triumph over Goucher on Oct. 13 in Baltimore, Md. Werner has six goals and an assist for 13 points for Susquehanna, which stands 11-2-2 overall and 4-0-1 in Landmark play after a 1-0 non-league loss to Gettysburg on Oct. 17 in Selinsgrove.

O’Donnell and the Soaring Eagles were 1-1 the previous week. She had a career-tying 23 saves in an 8-0 loss to league foe Nazareth on Oct. 9 in Rochester, N.Y. It was the third time this season that she has had 20 or more saves in a game. She rounded out the week with five saves as Elmira defeated Morrisville (3-2) for the team’s first-ever victory against the Mustangs on Oct. 13 in Pine Valley, N.Y. O’Donnell has given up 39 goals with 152 saves with a shutout for the Soaring Eagles who are 6-7 overall and 1-3 in league play after a 2-1 non-league victory over Keuka on Oct. 16 in Pine Valley.

“Tina has experienced tremendous growth both on and off the field in her time here,” coach Lauren Silva said. “She is the only goalie on our team this year and it would have been easy for her to become complacent, even unmotivated. But thankfully, that is not the type of athlete she is.”

The freshman was on a scoring spree in the Penn College’s last four games. The freshman forward had a goal and assisted on the second goal in a 2-0 victory over Lancaster Bible on Oct. 10. He opened the season by shooting rounds of 86 and 83 for a 169 total at the Penn State Harrisburg Fall Invitational on Sept. 1617 in Harrisburg.

The 5-foot-6 senior midfielder is the leading scorer on the Alvernia men’s soccer team, the Golden Wolves 6-9-2 overall and 2-3-0 in MAC Commonwealth play after a 2-1 double overtime victory over Widener in a league game on Oct. 17 in Reading.
