Wilson dramatically wins 4A championship
The Wilson boys soccer team scored with 17 seconds remaining to dramatically win the PIAA Class 4A championship on Nov. 17 at Hersheypark Stadium.
Victor Vottero’s shot was ruled to have just crossed the goal line as the score broke a scoreless deadlock and gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 victory for their first state title since 1992.
With the game appearing destined for overtime, midfielder Devven Frey received the ball from Lucas Sarge, but was closed down by a Radnor defender, the ball spraying out to Vottero streaking down the left side. Radnor goalkeeper Henry Cooke closed him down and got a piece of the shot, but it trickled toward goal. Radnor defender Josh Savadove stumbled slightly as he raced back and cleared the ball off the line, the ball hitting the underside of the crossbar and out.
Wilson capped its season 23-4-1 and did not allow a goal in its four PIAA tournament games. It was the Bulldogs’ championship moment after settling to second in the BCIAA and District 3.
