Susquehann­a’s Werner chosen Landmark’s Rookie of the Year

Gov. Mifflin grad shines for conference champion

Freshman Anna Werner was named Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year and was a Landmark firstteam selection on Nov. 7 after a solid first season playing with the Susquehann­a women’s soccer team.

Werner, a Governor Mifflin grad, started 18 games and was second on the team in scoring with seven goals and two assists for 16 points with four game-winners. He had two goals in a 4-1 victory over Goucher on Oct. 13 in Towson, Md. and had a big game for the River Hawks when she had an assist and the game-winning goal in a 2-1 triumph over Catholic in the Landmark semifinals on Oct. 30 in Selinsgrov­e. Susquehann­a won the league title on penalty kicks (5-4) over No. 1 seed Scranton on Nov. 3 in Scranton but saw the season end with a 1-1 tie and a 4-3 penalty kick loss to Rochester Tech on Nov. 10 in Rochester, N.Y.

“Anna had as impressive a first year of any player I’ve had the opportunit­y to coach,” Nick Hoover said. “Right from the start she looked ready to play at the college level both in terms of fitness and confidence.”

Despite dealing with an injury early in the season, the coach felt she came back stronger.

“She ended up being one of the best attacking players on our team to help us win the conference championsh­ip,” Hoover said. “Her Rookie of the Year award was the first for our team in history. On top of that, she’s a terrific person and student as well.”

The 6-foot, 178-pound junior was named to the Middle Atlantic Conference second team on Nov. 13 after the kicker led the Lebanon Valley football in scoring with 44 points. Bentz was 6-for-10 in field goals with two over 40 yards including a 42-yarder in a 3027 overtime loss to Wilkes on Sept. 8 in Annville. He was 26 of 27 in extra points and kicked off 41 times for 2,423 yards, 59.1 yards per kick with 16 touchbacks. The Dutchmen finished 2-8 overall and 2-6 in MAC play. The 6-foot, 185-pound true freshman wrapped up a spectacula­r career at quarterbac­k for the Grove City football team. Ehst led the Wolverines to a 56-48 victory over Morrisvill­e in the ECAC James Lynah Bowl on Nov. 17 in Grove City. He hit on 10 of 13 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns giving him 92 completing on 157 attempts for 1,495 yards and 17 touchdowns despite not playing in the first three games. Grove City finished 8-3 but was 7-1 with Ehst at quarterbac­k.

The junior wrapped up his season with the Colgate men’s cross country team with a big effort at the IC4A Championsh­ips on Nov. 17 at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. He covered the 8,000 meter course in 25:03 which best his previous best time at the distance by nearly two minutes. He finished 100th overall with a blistering 5:03 per mile pace. His previous best time in an 8k race was 26:53.6. Myers had a personal best time of 36:24.3 in the 10,000 meter run at the NCAA Northeast Regionals on Nov. 9 in Amherst, N.Y. The senior and her Canisius women’s volleyball team defeated Rider 3-1 in the semifinals but dropped a 3-0 decision to Iona in the team’s first-ever Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championsh­ip on Nov. 16-17 in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The 5-foot10 middle hitter had 13 kills against Rider and 11 vs. Iona. She led the Golden Griffins with 256 kills, was second in total blocks with 75.0 and third in points scored with 296.0. She also had 30 digs. Canisius finished 17-12 overall and was 14-4 in MAAC regular-season play.

The Long Island University field hockey team suffered through a 2-15 season with a 0-5 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference but the junior defensive midfielder started all 17 games for the Blackbirds. Dennis scored her first collegiate goal and it was a game-winner in a 2-1 victory over Holy Cross on Sept. 14 in Worcester, Mass. She also had an assist and a defensive save during the season. Dennis had an assist in 30 starts heading into this season.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound redshirt junior wide receiver earned AllPSAC East second team honors Nov. 14 for his play with the Bloomsburg football team, the Huskies finishing 6-5 overall and 4-2 in league play. Allen led the team with 45 receptions good for 532 yards (11.80 per reception) with seven touchdowns. He had two scores in a 28-24 victory over Shippensbu­rg on Sept. 22 in Bloomsburg and two touchdowns in a 33-7 triumph over Lock Haven on Oct. 20. He has 78 receptions for 1,114 yards and nine touchdowns for his career. Allen also returned 21 punts for 209 yards and two kickoffs for 38 yards.

“Michael has been our ‘go to’ receiver since he arrived on campus,” coach Paul Darragh said. “He is also an extremely dependable returner and brings big-play capability to our special teams. He’s a tremendous young man with a great work ethic.” The 6-foot-1, 225-pound senior linebacker was named to the PSAC East first team on Nov. 14 after a big season with the Shippensbu­rg football team. Emge led the Raiders with 80 tackles including 41 unassisted. He had 10 tackles for losses of 40 yards and a sack. He also intercepte­d two passes and had three quarterbac­k hits. Shippensbu­rg finished 6-5 overall and 3-3 in league play after a 45-21 victory over Indiana on Nov. 10. Emge had nine tackles and returned an intercepti­on 20 yards for a score. He was named PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week on Nov. 12.

field hockey team, the Chippewas finishing 2-16 overall and 1-5 in the Mid-American Conference. Huddelson had the only goal in a 5-1 league loss to Kent State on Oct. 7 in Kent, OH and had an assist in a 2-1 non-league loss to Davidson on Oct. 14 in Davidson, N.C. She played in all 18 games with 17 starts as a freshman and collected her first collegiate goal in a 3-2 overtime loss to Lock Haven, the team not winning a game in 18 starts.

The senior was named to the MAC Commonweal­th second team for his play with the Alvernia men’s soccer team. The senior midfielder had three goals and nine assists for 15 points, the assists and points led the 8-11-2 Golden Wolves. Junior defender Cody Hart (Exeter) earned honorable mention after picking up three goals including a game-winner in a 2-1 overtime victory over Widener. The team also got steady play on defense from freshmen Ethan Laverdure and JP Pierdomeni­co, both Oley Valley grads.
