New PASSHE chancellor could be north star in higher education
Brandywine sophomore shares his views after Greenstein speaks at Kutztown University Open Forum
The new Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Chancellor Daniel Greenstein recently spoke at an Open Forum at Kutztown University.
I was enthralled in the positive words coming from the chancellor asking things like, “How can our universities support education to everyone affordably?” with the response of, “In my view these are technical issues, we have the resources.”
Greenstein heavily touched on the ideology that our culture was to blame, and that it needed fixing. I agree with this statement to some extent. Although the claim that people are distrustful is valid there is some positive aspects such as competitiveness, a trait that drives people to do well and work hard for what they want to do with their lives. In certain fields you have to be one of the most qualified to even be considered for a position. Taking that trait out of our culture would be detrimental to society as a whole.
He made a statement that, “Education isn’t a firehose where we can point it at a student and it works.”
He understands that different students need different things. Greenstein previously headed the Postsecondary Success strategy at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He was also a top administrator in the University of California system. This being said he has experience in working with education.
He talked extensively about setting goals for the next five years as a form of a “North Star.” In truth Greenstein himself could, in fact, be the north star in higher education and the face of a new era of degrees.
