Schaeffer shining for Muhlenberg wrestling

- By Bill Arsenault

Scott Schaeffer has competed in both the 197-pound class and as a heavyweight for the Muhlenberg wrestling team in his four seasons with the Mules.

This season the Exeter Township grad has been competing in the heavyweight class. He was 3-1 at Muhlenberg’s Scotty Wood Duals on Nov. 17 in Allentown. He took a 6-3 decision in a 50-0 victory over Camden County, won by forfeit in a 59-0 triumph over Temple and pinned his foe in 1:16 in a 24-15 victory over Washington & Jefferson. His string ended when he was pinned in 4:27 in a 36-6 loss to Centre in the final match of the tourney.

He kicked off his season by finishing eighth in the annual Petrofes Invitational on Nov. 30-Dec. 1 in Grantham.

“Scott Schaeffer is one of the most selfless and teamfirst athletes that I’ve ever met,” coach Jason McLean said. “After getting down in weight and thinking about going in another weight class, he came to me and asked me where we needed him this year.”

The coach told Schaeffer that the team would not have a heavyweight for the beginning of the season.

“Scott basically decided to take it upon himself to make sure that wasn’t going to happen,” McLean said. “That was evident over our Scotty Wood weekend.”

The junior had the top performance for the Colgate men’s indoor track team at the Utica College Pioneer Winter Classic on Dec. 8 in Utica, N.Y. He finished second in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:58.88 which was just .15 from the winning time and just short of his personal record (1:57.16) which he recorded at the Patriot League Indoor Track Championships when he was a freshman. Myers helped the 4x800 relay finish second with a time of 8:11.14 at the Greg Page Relays on Dec. 1 in Ithaca, N.Y.

The senior opened season with the Stockton women’s indoor track team at the Fastrack Metro Season Opener on Dec. 1 in the Ocean Breeze Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. Lodge finished seventh in the 60 meter dash in personal record time of 8.27 and seventh in the 200 meter dash in 26.50. She was the top finisher among Division III athletes in both events. Her personal best in the 200 (25.63) was recorded when she finished fourth at the New Jersey Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships back in 2017.

The senior is once again competing in freestyle events for the Niagara men’s swim team. Leskowicz swam a leg on the 800 free relay which finished third at the annual Zippy Invitational on Nov. 30 to Dec. 2 in Akron, OH. Their time was 6:57.66. He also swam in three individual races. He was 11th out of 33 swimmers in the 200 freestyle in 1:44.81, 12th out of 26 in the 500 freestyle in 4:45.09 and 20th out of 42 in the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.87.

The true freshman is seeing action in the 133-pound class at open tourneys for the Ursinus wrestling team. He has a 3-4 record with a pin. At the season-opening Messiah Invitational on Nov. 3 in Grantham, Seibert helped the Bears finish fourth out of nine teams by posting a 2-2 record and picking up the first pin of his college career, that coming in 4:22. At the Fall Brawl on Nov. 10 in Collegeville, he was 1-1 with a 7-4 decision in the first round and a 16-4 major decision loss in the second round.

The 5-foot-5 senior guard has started all 75 games that the Penn State Berks women’s basketball team has played in her career. She’s third on the team’s career scoring list with 1,312 points and first in scoring average at 17.5. She also has 324 rebounds, 201 assists and 171 steals. She’s connected on 181 of 584 4-pointers (31 percent).

This season, Daddona is averaging 13.4 points a game for the Nittany Lions who are 3-5 overall and 2-1 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference after an 86-59 league victory over Penn College on Dec. 5 in Williamsport. She had a season-high 23 points in an 81-78 league loss to Gallaudet on Dec. 1 also in Williamsport.

“Deanna leads the team by example and always gives full effort during a game and at practice,” coach Kristin Hawley said. “We can rely on her to be productive night after night.”

Daddona is a captain this season and brings a lot of experience to the young Nittany Lions.

“She brings a calming influence to her teammates,” Hawley said. “Her growth, along with her tenacity and competitive spirit makes her one of the all-time leading scorers in school history.”

The fifth-year senior got off to a big start with the Penn State men’s indoor track team at Bucknell’s Bison Opener on Nov. 30-Dec. 1 in Lewisburg. Shigo finished first out of 18 competitors in the weight throw. His winning effort of 69 feet, 9 inches came on his final throw and was an IC4A qualifier. Shigo came up a little short of his personal best. That was recorded when he finished sixth at the Big Ten Indoor Championships last February with a toss of 72 feet, 4¼ inches.

The sophomore is 4-2 competing in open tournaments for the York wrestling team. He’s in the 184 pound class but has to take a back seat to senior Frankie Krauss who is 13-1 and competed in the NCAA Championship as a junior. Reinhardt has three pins and all of them came when he finished 3-1 at King’s College’s Monarch Invitational on Nov. 3 in Wilkes-Barre. As a freshman, Reinhardt posted a 3-7 record, also competing in open matches and also wrestling behind Krauss.
