North Main Street bridge work completed

The Pennsylvan­ia Department of Transporta­tion Engineerin­g District 5 announced that North Main Street is open in Amity Township.

North Main Street had been closed since Aug. 8 to rehabilita­te the bridge over Monocacy Creek.

During the bridge rehabilita­tion, North Main Street was closed and detoured between Monocacy Creek Road and Pennsylvan­ia Avenue. The posted detour utilized Monocacy Creek Road, Route 422, River Bridge Road, Route 724, Route 345 and Limekiln Road.

Work on this bridge included the rehabilita­tion of the masonry stone wall, drainage improvemen­ts and miscellane­ous repairs.

This work was part of an ongoing Reading Area Transporta­tion Study Bridge Preservati­on and Repair Project to rehabilita­te or repair 15 structures in Berks County.

J.D. Eckman Inc. of Atglen, PA. is the general contractor on the $6,827,834 contract, with work on all 15 bridges expected to be complete by July 2019.

The North Main Bridge is a steel stringer bridge originally constructe­d in 1932. It is 61 feet long, and 23 feet wide. This section of North Main Street has an average daily traffic volume of 5,368 vehicles.
