SHILLINGTON >> Behind 169 rushing yards and five touchdowns from Nick Singleton, Gov. Mifflin handled Muhlenberg 48-0 on a Friday in a Berks Football League Section 1 game at Mustang Stadium.

“We knew we had the ability to be a good football team and win with even starting 0-3,” said Mustangs coach Jeff Lang. “Our kids reached down and dug deep tonight after a good week of practice, and give themselves something to build on the rest of the season.”

Singleton, who was held to 267 yards through the first three games of the season, had more than half that total in one game.

“That is exactly what Nick is capable of every single week,” Lang said. “That is also what he expects of himself and I bet he feels pretty good after tonight’s game.”

Mifflin’s defense made the first big play of the game on Muhlenberg’s first play from scrimmage as Samuel Thompson intercepted a deep pass from quarterback Shawn Shuker at midfield. Following a block in the back penalty on the return, Singleton bounced it to the left side and scored his first touchdown untouched on a 57yard run.

The Muhls (0-1, 0-4) would then drive into Mustangs territory on a few short passes before being stopped on fourth down at the Mustangs 37-yard line. Mifflin then would use a 12play, 63-yard drive to extend its lead to 14-0 on a 13-yard scamper from Singleton. Singleton would score his third touchdown of the first half at the 5:57 mark of the second quarter on a 2-yard run. He then capped the ensuing drive with a 55-yard touchdown run to make it 28-0.

A short punt then set up Mifflin for another touchdown before halftime as senior quarterback Kolbie Reeser found a wideopen Jaiden Quiles over the middle for a 36-yard touchdown. The Mustangs amassed 314 total yards at halftime, while limiting the Muhls to 50.

“My offensive line stepped up big time tonight,” said Singleton. “Coach has been saying in practice keep pushing and we cannot fall down anymore so I thought tonight was a very much needed performance from our whole team.”

Mifflin (1-0, 1-3) opened the second half with a seven-play, 48-yard drive to make it 41-0 as Singleton capped his night with a 6-yard touchdown run around the right side.

The Mustangs defense continued to handle the Muhls in the second half as they allowed just three first downs during the final 24 minutes.

Mifflin would get one more touchdown in the fourth quarter as Benjamin Adams ran in from 44 yards out to bring the score to 48-0 with just under two minutes left.

The Mustangs held a staggering 430-90 advantage in total yards with 346 coming on the ground. Mifflin also held the Muhls to 2-of-10 on third down and just eight total first downs.
