Singleton runs for 280 in Mifflin rout of York

GOV. MIFFLIN 55, YORK 6 » Nick Singleton ran for 280 yards and five touchdowns to lead Gov. Mifflin to a 55-6 victory over York High in a non-league high school football opener Saturday at York.

Singleton, the senior who is committed to Penn State, scored on runs of 8 yards, 8 yards, 50 yards, 32 yards and 70 yards. He also had a 44-yard run to the 1.

He entered the season with a career total of 3,768 yards, 1,010 shy of the Berks career record.

Last season, the 6-foot, 210-pound halfback had his third straight 1,000yard season. He ran for 1,303 yards and 22 touchdowns in eight games, averaging 162.9 yards a game and 12.5 a carry.

HAMBURG 47, YORK YECH 20 » Diohnny Ruiz scored three touchdowns in the first half Saturday at York to lead Hamburg to a 4720 win over York Tech is a season-opening, non-league football game.

Ruiz scored on runs of 58 and 15 yards and hauled in a pass from Xander Menapace for a 64-yard touchdown for the Hawks.

Ruiz finished with five carries for 109 yards and two catches for 73 yards.

Menapace also threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Tristan Baer. Baer also scored on a 32-yard run for Hamburg, which led 33-6 at halftime.

Pierce Mason and Aiden Readinger also rushed for touchdowns for Hamburg.

The game was the first for the Hawks under new coach Jeff Chillot.

Baer finished with 85 yards on five carries and three catches for 84 yards.

Mason had 40 yards on three carries.

Menapace finished 9-for14 for 186 yards.

WILSON 27, CENTRAL DAUPHIN 21 » With Wilson players going out of the game almost faster than coach Doug Dahms could replace them, someone needed to make a play. Up stepped wide receiver TJ Flite.

Flite took a handoff from third-string quarterbac­k Nick Crocona and raced 50 yards for a touchdown on a jet sweep to give Wilson a seemingly comfortabl­e 20-point lead midway through the fourth quarter.

Wilson held on to defeat Central Dauphin 27-21 Saturday night in a rain-delayed season-opening game by recovering an onside kick attempt in the final minute.

Starting quarterbac­k Brad Hoffman and backup Gannon Brubaker were both out when Crocona was called into the game. He entered with third-string running back Jaison Beckford already in the game due to injuries to starter Jadyn Jones and backup Gavin Lenart.

Cameron Jones, who returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown for Wilson’s first touchdown, also was out for the entire second half. But other players just kept stepping up.

Jadyn Jones ran 1 yard for a touchdown in the second quarter to give Wilson a 13-0 lead. He finished with 116 yards on 16 carries before he was injured at the end of a 20-yard run to the Central Dauphin 2.

Lenart, who had left the game earlier, returned on the first play of the fourth quarter to run 2 yards for a touchdown to give Wilson a 21-7 lead.

COCALICO 36, CONRAD WEISER 21 » Saturday at Denver, Anthony Bourassa rushed for 206 yards and three touchdowns as Cocalico ran past Conrad Weiser in a non-conference football opener Saturday.

The Eagles gained 334 yards on the ground and offset a tremendous performanc­e by Scouts quarterbac­k Logan Klitsch, who passed for 275 yards and one touchdown and ran for 62 yards and two scores.

Klitsch scored on a 22-yard run and connected with Trey Dianna for an 18-yard touchdown, which gave Conrad Weiser a 14-7 lead after the first quarter.

Cocalico took control in the second quarter, scoring on Austin Vang’s 5-yard run and Blayke Taddei’s 74-yard strike to Steven Flinton. Vang added a two-point conversion run to put the Eagles up 21-14 at halftime.

Bourassa took over in the second half, scoring on a pair of 5-yard TD runs and adding a two-point conversion. He ran for an 88-yard score in the first quarter.

Klitsch scored on a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring. He completed 18-of-30 passes and threw an intercepti­on. MCCASKEY 27, READING HIGH 20 » At Shirk Stadium, Shymere Covington rushed for 97 yards and two touchdowns as McCaskey held off Reading High in a nonleague opener.

The Red Tornado snapped a 26-game losing streak and picked up its first win since a 38-21 victory over the Red Knights on Sept. 15, 2018.

Daryonel Fontanez, playing quarterbac­k for the injured Amier Burdine, threw touchdown passes of 89 yards to Jayse Ganns and of 48 yards to Deshawn Wilson.

Dezure Suber returned an intercepti­on 76 yards for a touchdown, which gave Reading High a 12-7 lead after the first quarter.

McCaskey took the lead for good when Matthew Remash threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Burks in the second quarter.

After the Tornado blocked a punt early in the third, Kasir Taylor lobbed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Will Almeyda to make it 21-12. EPHRATA 41, MUHLENBERG 20 » Saturday at Ephrata, Andre Weidman ran for 149 yards and three touchdowns and Hunter Mortimer passed for two scores as Ephrata beat Muhlenberg in a non-league football opener at War Memorial Field.

The Mountainee­rs won a season opener for the first time in 18 years and handed the Muhls their 18th consecutiv­e defeat.

Ephrata built a 14-0 lead in the first quarter behind Weidman’s 9-yard touchdown run and Mortimer’s 83-yard pass to a wide-open Jeremiah Knowles.

Muhlenberg answered quickly when Aaron Shuker returned the ensuing kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown.

The Mounts added two touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 27-7 halftime lead, the first coming on Weidman’s 4-yard run and the second when defensive tackle Deric Hoover recovered a Muhls fumble in the end zone.

Ephrata drove 71 yards to open the third quarter and scored on Weidman’s 22-yard run to make it 34-7. Shuker again responded, this time with a 64-yard touchdown run.

The Mounts increased the lead again with Mortimer’s second TD pass late in the third quarter, a 4-yarder to Clay Ringler.

Josh Dipini closed the scoring when he ran for a 16-yard TD in the fourth for Muhlenberg.

Sophomore Kyle Archie completed 9-of-11 passes for 90 yards in his first start for the Muhls.

Friday’s games

BERKS CATHOLIC 46, EXECUTIVE EDUCATION 12 » Christian Cacchione said in the preseason that if he keeps getting the ball, good things will happen.

As if there was any doubt, Cacchione scored four touchdowns to help Berks Catholic open the season with a weather-shortened 46-12 victory over Executive Education Academy Friday in a non-league game at Forino Sports Complex.

Moments after Cacchione scored on a 47-yard run, lightning was spotted and the teams were pulled off the field before the Saints could attempt the extra point.

The teams never returned.

Executive Education is a first-year program that practices on a makeshift field that isn’t regulation size and doesn’t have its own locker room. The players suit up in an assembly room at the school.

In addition to his final run, Cacchione also scored on a 14-yard fumble return, a 36-yard punt return and a 16-yard run.

The senior, who was named to pafootball­news. com’s Class 4A All-State first team last year at slot/ H-back, finished with 139 yards on six carries. KUTZTOWN 27, SHENANDOAH VALLEY 14 » At Shenandoah, Kutztown picked up where it left off last year by open- ing the season with a victory over Shenandoah Valley in a non-league game.

Kutztown defeated Shenandoah Valley 36-0 in the season finale last year to snap a 35-game losing streak that dated to the end of the 2016 season.

Quarterbac­k Jacob Laf- ferty rushed for 118 yards and two TDs to lead the Cougars. He also completed 3-of-6 passes for 49 yards.

Lennon Neiman rushed for a 178 yards and a touchdown and caught one pass for 29 yards for Kutztown.

The Cougars used a surprise onside kick in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

After Neiman scored on a 10-run run to put Kutztown ahead 21-14, David Ruhf recovered the onside kick by Anthony Kenney to set up a 43-yard TD run by Lafferty.

Lafferty also scored on a 2-yard run in the second quarter. Issac Schneider got Kutztown on the board earlier in the second quarter with a 4-yard TD run after Shenandoah Valley had taken a 6-0 lead.

WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 27, FLEETWOOD 14 » At West Chester, Tanner Maddocks rushed for more than 100 yards and a touchdown and passed for another score but as Fleetwood dropped its non-league opener.

Maddocks ran 30 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter to give Fleetwood a 7-6 lead.

After Henderson had taken a 14-7 halftime lead, Maddocks threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Mason Musitano to tie it at 14-14 in the third quarter. Maddocks completed 14-of-23 passes for 232 yards, but was intercepte­d twice. SPRINGFIEL­D (MONTCO) 35, SCHUYLKILL VALLEY 7 » At Orefield, Avery Adekola scored Schuylkill Valley’s only touchdown in a loss to Springfiel­d (Montco) in a non-league opener.

The defeat spoiled the Panthers coaching debut of Bruce Harbach, the former Lancaster Catholic coach.
