(Perhaps you are thinking, “Why am I writing something about moons?” Well last month I noticed the full moon. It was so big and bright that I could just about read a newspaper outside! But I did not do this though it was a nice night with little wind and no clouds.)

(Now it’s the month of September and I wondered when is it full moon?
So I got my calendar and looked. It’s Sept. 20, two days before the first day of fall. The most common name for the full moon in September is the Harvest Moon. That is what it is called this year 2021. But sometimes it is also called the Corn Moon. Why are there two names?)

(The Harvest Moon is the full moon that is closest to the first day of fall. But last year in 2020 the full moon was the second day in September- 20 days before the first day of fall. The full moon in October was Oct. 1 and closer to the first day of fall. So last year the Harvest Moon was in October and the full moon in September
was called the Corn Moon.)

(Now I must say- I was a school teacher for many years. I almost always knew when is was full moon- and I did not need to look on the calendar! How did I know this? The children squirmed around more and were in trouble more often. Perhaps you also see how full moon changes how people behave. Actually the Latin name for the moon is ‘luna’. This word is the origin of the modern day word like ‘lunacy’ and ‘lunatic’.)
