Mifflin shows it’s more than just Nick Singleton
Many Mustangs contribute in 42-14 win over Wilson
Nick Singleton was thrilled to set the Berks County all-time touchdown record Friday night in front of his home fans.
The Gov. Mifflin senior rushed for three touchdowns to raise his career total to 90, breaking the Berks record set by former Hamburg and Wilson running back Iggy Reynoso.
But the biggest thing that was obvious as Gov. Mifflin routed visiting Wilson 42-14 in their non-league football rivalry was that the Mustangs are much more than a one-man show.
Fullback Trey Rock and quarterback Eden Johnson ran for Gov. Mifflin’s first two scores to help the Mustangs (2-0) break out to a 14-0 lead midway through the opening quarter.
“They keyed on me for most of the game,” Singleton said. “That’s why we have great playmakers
like Eden and Trey Rock to move the ball down the field.”
The Bulldogs (1-1) may have keyed on Singleton, but they couldn’t stop him.
He carried 14 times for 137 yards, including touchdown runs of 37, 8 and 32 yards.
The Mustangs built a 35-0 lead early in the third quarter to invoke the mercy rule against the Bulldogs for the second straight year and walked off with the Gurski-Linn Trophy.
Singleton’s 32yard run with 8:25 left was the 90th touchdown of his career. He was glad to set the record at home in front of the biggest crowd to see a Berks County high school football game in nearly two years.
“It meant a lot,” said Singleton, a Penn State recruit. “The linemen have been blocking, the coaches are making the right calls for me to run up the field.”
The right calls early were to give the ball to Rock on quick runs up the middle or have Johnson keep the ball and run with it.
Rock scored on an 8-yard run and Johnson raced 35 yards for a score.
Singleton finally got in on the act with 17 seconds left in the first quarter when he raced 37 yards for a touchdown and a 20-0 Gov. Mifflin lead.
“it’s a three-headed monster,” said Mifflin coach Jeff Lang. “It left our quarterback wide open on the edge if they didn’t hand off to Trey. It’s tough to stop the three of them.
“That’s the idea of the option. They take one guy away, two other guys are going to be open.”
Wilson’s Jaydn Jones ran for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter long after the outcome had been decided.
The Bulldogs had trouble moving the ball in the first half against the firedup Gov. Mifflin defense. The Bulldogs also turned the ball over three times in the first half with Singleton coming up with one of Gov. Mifflin’s two interceptions.
