Buckwalter wins season title

Timmy Buckwalter won the season title and Rick Laubach earned the victory in the feature in Friday’s modified event at Big Diamond Speedway.

Also getting season championsh­ips were Doug Hendricks in the open sportsman and Steve Lyle in the 602 crate sportsman. Andrew Fayash III already had clinched the roadrunner title.

Getting the other feature wins Friday were Cole Stangle in the open sportsman, Doug Smith in the 602 crate sportsman and Joe Bassininky in the roadrunner­s.

In the modifieds, Duane Howard went into the 25-lap feature holding a five-point lead in the season standings over Buckwalter and needed to finish ahead of him to win the title.

Laubach took the lead at the start and maintained it the rest of the way for his first win of the season.

Buckwalter was in sixth at the halfway point with Howard running about 10th. Buckwalter moved into the top five following a restart on Lap 16.

He was able to maintain that position

and finish fifth, while Howard came in ninth, to win his first career modified championsh­ip.

Alex Yankowski finished second in Friday’s feature, followed by MIke Lisowski, Louden Reimert, Buckwalter, Mike Gular, Jeff Strunk, Ryan Watt, Howard and Nick Rochinski.

“You know you come to the races to have fun but championsh­ips are won back at the shop,” Buckwalter said in a press release, “and these guys are in my shop every day and without them I wouldn’t be standing here.”
