Boone, Twin Valley fall in first-round games

The Blazers are beaten 42-20 by Waynesboro, while the Raiders are defeated by Spring Grove 33-6

Daniel Boone got off to a fast start Friday in its District 3 Class 5A firstround game at Waynesboro, jumping to a 14-point lead after a quarter.

But the Blazers couldn’t maintain that momentum, falling 42-20 to the fifthseede­d Indians.

AJ Hofer ran for two touchdowns in the first quarter for 12th-seeded Boone (5-4), but Waynesboro scored 30 straight points on the way to the first district win in school history.

The Indians (9-2) scored twice in the second quarter, on a 35-yard run by Aidan Mencia and a 4-yard run by Jesse Julias, to tie it.

The Blazers nearly took the lead at the end of the first half. First, Alex Vassallo appeared to make a diving catch in the end zone, but it was ruled incomplete. Then, Nate Millard missed a 42-yard field goal.

Waynesboro opened the second half with a fourplay drive, capped by a 12yard pass from Louis Lindsay to Garrett Blount.

The Indians added a 26yard field goal by Lindsay on a drive during which they converted a fourthand-19, then got an intercepti­on return for a touchdown by Rhyan Day to make it 30-14.

Boone was able to cut it to 30-20 on Hofer’s third TD, but Waynesboro responded with two more scores.

Hofer finished with 178 yards on 29 carries.

The Blazers were playing for the first time since Oct. 15 after having their last two games canceled due to positive COVID-19 cases in the program. The 13th-seeded Raiders (6-5) were playing the first district playoff game in school history.

Andrew Osmun gave the fourth-seeded Rockets (9-1) the lead on a 20-yard run with 6:39 left in the first quarter before Brooks took over.

He scored on a 96-yard run to give Spring Grove a 12-0 lead with 1:10 left in the first quarter. Then, after the Rockets stopped Twin Valley and took over with just 56.7 seconds left in the first half, he capped a drive with a 1-yard run to make it 19-0 at the half.

The Raiders opened the second half with a successful onside kick and turned it into their only score. Dominic Caruso scored on a 1-yard run with 7:43 left in the third to cut it to 19-7.

Brooks then scored on runs of 3 yards and 24 yards to help the Rockets put it away.
