Spokane resident Shawn Whisman, 49, was driving south in a Chevy van about 1:15 p.m. when he went into the northbound lane near Old Albion Road, striking a Dodge Caravan driven by Colfax resident Brent L. Webster, 36, the Washington State Patrol reported in a news release. A northbound Land Rover driven by Spokane resident Mitchell L. Nunn, 47, then struck the Chevy van. Whisman and two passengers in the van, Kurt M. Whisman, 20, and Summer L. Fitch, 19, were injured and transported to a hospital. Webster and four passengers in the Caravan were injured. They were children ages 1, 3 and 11 and Crystal L. Webster, 37. Nunn was not injured but a passenger in the Land Rover, Shawna Nunn, 46, was injured and taken to a hospital. Whisman was cited for following too close, WSP said. WSP trooper injured while responding to I-90 crash A Washington State Patrol trooper on the scene of a crash on Interstate 90 in Spokane Valley was injured late Sunday when his car was struck by a passing vehicle, WSP reported. The trooper was transported to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, WSP reported on social media. Troopers were responding to a crash about 6:15 p.m. on eastbound I-90 at the Barker exit when the car struck the WSP car. The driver was detained and is expected to be charged with vehicular assault, WSP said. Traffic was diverted from I-90 as the crash was investigated. Meanwhile, it was Andrew Wallace’s first time on cross-country skis. Ever. He was joined by his grizzled mentor, August Sivak. The race was Sivak’s third time Nordic skiing. “I did it as a date,” Sivak said about his first time skiing. “I wouldn’t recommend it. She was cold. We’re no longer dating.” Wallace finished the hilly course with a time of 1 hour, 19 minutes and 11 seconds. Sivak finished with a time of 1 hour, 19 minutes and 13 seconds. And despite temperatures that hovered in the single digits, the two loved the experience. “We were trying to figure out the best technique,” Wallace said. “I don’t think we ever figured it out.” Cold temperatures are the arch nemesis of speed demons. The five-day-per-week Bingham County Chronicle will serve Aberdeen, Shelley, Firth, Fort Hall, Blackfoot and other towns, Adams Publishing Group said. It will be published in print Tuesday through Friday and Sunday. The announcement comes as many newspapers across the country have folded. But the downward trend in the news media economy is affecting organizations in larger markets more than community newspapers, said Eric Johnston, Adams Publishing Group’s west division president. “There’s a good road ahead for community newspapers,” Johnston said. “Markets like Pocatello and Idaho Falls and Bingham, residents in these markets rely on newspapers to get local information. We have a moral imperative to keep residents in these areas informed.” The area is ripe for a new publication, Travis Quast, Adams Publishing Group regional president, told the Post Register. The region has seen reduced news coverage since the Shelley Pioneer closed in 2017. IDAHO FALLS CONTACT THE WRITER: (509) 459-5508 [email protected] SNOW take three days.
