‘Mater Mondays’ added to list of centennial events in Aragon
Aragon, established in 1899 and incorporated on July 23, 1914, continues to celebrate its centennial.
As part of a series of planned events, Mayor Ken Suffridge has declared “Mater Mondays” will be observed during July.
The idea was born during a presentation at the Georgia Municipal Association’s annual conference in Savannah. The topic was how to revital- ize a community.
“We now have Georgia fresh produce on Wednesdays at Tom Pittman Recreation Center, located off New Prospect Road in Aragon,” Suffridge said.
He now invites area producers growing tomatoes and seeking a place to sell them to come on Mondays and set up at the Tom Pittman Recreation parking lot.
Meanwhile, a new 30 x 20 foot stage is complete and was used during the recent Aragon BBQ. Work was done by a group of volunteers, including Rex Garner, Frankie Hilburn and Wayne Sanders, Scott Johnson, Troy Smith, Robert Godbee, Hunter Spinks and Ken Suffridge. Daniel Johnston and crews from public works did the groundwork.
Other centennial activities include:
Aragon Historical Society plans a car and truck show at Tom Pitman Recreation Park on Saturday, Sept. 6.
The second annual Aragon Mill JamFest will be held at the same site on Saturday, Oct. 11.
World-renowned singer and songwriter Si Kahn was featured during the first JamFest on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013. He wrote the original lyrics to the song “Aragon Mill” when he heard stories from workers following a 1970 visit to the community.
Suffridge hopes a “Chili Cook Off” can be organized for October. He said the recreation center would be made available to an individual or group interested in the project.
