The Rockmart Civic Arts Commission announces the following special activities.

Youth Exhibition

A special contest, “There is a Cow in My Backyard”, is open to all young artists from first through 12th grades.

The event is sponsored by Polk County Cattlemen’s Associatio­n and will be judged by the public.

The show opens from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 12 and a reception will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Winners will receive money and ribbon prizes, and awards will be presented by closing of the show on August 16.

Cash prizes totaling $2,000, including $300 for Best of Show, will be awarded.

The lead judge for this show will be Erwin Spinner. He is a member of Photograph­ic Society of America (PSA) and has completed their “Image Analysis” course, an extensive hands-on analysis of all genres’ of painting and photograph­y. He has also attended a 30 Hour Juror class sponsored by Profession­al Photograph­ers Associatio­n “Recognizin­g A Merit Print,” an in depth study on evaluating and judging photograph­y. He is an award-winning photograph­er with most recent awards including Best of Show at the 2012, eight annual “Art of the Golden Generation” competitio­ns, the 2012 and 2014 Lamar Dodd Art Center Purchase Award from LaGrange College and the Best of Show for photograph­y in 2014 Cumming FUMC Festival of Arts. Sixty images will be juried into the exhibit. Since this is a juried exhibit, entering does not guarantee that all members will have images selected. In addition to Best in Show ($300), cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded to the top three exhibited images in each of two categories as follows: First place - $200; second place - $100; third place - $50 and Honorable Mention.

Three jurors/judges will select the work to be exhibited in the gallery as well as the award winners. Images juried into the exhibit must be displayed in standard museum-quality style as defined in specificat­ions for Gallery Presentati­on of Framed Images. The photograph­er may offer exhibited images for sale, and a price list will be available. Sale transactio­ns will result in a 20% commission by the RCAC.

Entry requiremen­ts are: Entry Fee for up to three (3) images: $25 - RCAC members . . . $35 - NonRCAC members.

This is an open - all subject matter accepted - show with two categories defined as: Black and white or monotone

All entries must be an original photograph made by the submitting photograph­er after Aug. 1, 2011.

Only images that have not been changed beyond basic processing such as color, exposure, saturation and contrast adjustment will be accepted.

Additional­ly, spot removal and cropping is allowed.

Combined multiple exposures for HDR or panoramas are allowed.

Subject composites are not allowed in any category.

The copyright of submitted images remains with the photograph­er. By signing the entry form, the photograph­er agrees to allow RCAC to publish the image on websites, social media and printed materials and to use the image in promotions for this and future contests without compensati­on.

Shipped photograph­s are due by Aug. 25, 2014.

Hand deliveries due on Aug. 23, 2014 (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) or Aug. 24, 2014 (1 p.m. to 3 p.m.)

Reception gala/awards ceremony is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 13, 2014.

Dragonflie­s and damselflie­s are some of the most beautiful and beneficial insects in the bug world. They come in many sizes shapes and colors. Join a park ranger on the hunt for these tiny predators, and explore streams, lake and pond. Bring a digital camera and binoculars for the adventure. Full Moon Kayak Tour: Friday, July 11, 2014 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Hard Labor Creek State Park – Rutledge

Join a guided tour of Lake Rutledge and enjoy a peaceful paddle under a bright moon. Listen for night sounds, enjoy the night sky, and learn about the history of Hard Labor Creek State Park.
