Memorial blood drive scheduled on July 8

- By AGNES HAGIN

A memorial blood drive is scheduled from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, in the Nathan Dean Community Center on Goodyear Street in Rockmart.

The American Red Cross community event is scheduled in memory of Earline W. Akins, who passed away on May 17.

“People in area hospitals depend on the generous donations of volunteer blood donors each and every day,” said Randy Edwards, chief executive officer, American Red Cross, Southern Blood Services Region.

“These patients may never get a chance to say thank you to the person who helped them, but the Red Cross is happy to provide this opportunity to show appreciation to these donors on their behalf.”

Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. The American Red Cross Southern Blood Services Region provides lifesaving blood to patients in more than 120 hospitals.

Approximately 1,200 people need to give blood or platelets each weekday to meet hospital demand.

Akins, blood drive coordinator, was active in its continued success, according to ARC volunteers who knew her.

“She was dedicated and had a passion for the local blood program,” said Peggy Watts. “I have been a volunteer for many years and watched as she organized, placed signs and made calls to remind everyone to give.”

Her dedication and professional attitude could be attributed to her career choice, according to Margaret Statham, ARC volunteer.

She remembers the days when Akins, a reg- istered nurse, worked at Rockmart- Aragon Hospital. In those days, her interest in people and helping get donors was evident.

Friends recall that she was a donor and always wanted to “give the gift of life” to prevent blood shortages.

“She went above and beyond what was required,” Watts said. “She had a great compassion for people and wanted to help everyone she knew.”

Audrey Williams and Doris Scott also worked blood drives with Akins. Both remember that she would bring things to make everything “look cheerful” to give “potential donors a good experience.”

And, she was always present before, during and after the event. She also provided refreshments and encouraged and supported others who would provide sweets and sandwiches.
