Youth, adults involved in mission experience
More than 100 youth and adult volunteers will be involved in the Polk 2014 Rivers of Life mission project July 9 through July 13.
First United Methodist and First Baptist in Rockmart with support from other local churches are partnering in five days dedicated to serving others.
A series of meetings have been held to plan this opportunity for youth to become involved in a mission experience. It is designed to offer participants spiritual growth and worship sessions while serving the needs of the elderly, handicapped and economically disadvantaged citizens of Polk County.
“We have invited youth to participate in this lifechanging event,” said Rev. Jeannette Dickens, pastor at First United Methodist in Rockmart. “The physical, emotional and spiritual growth that accompanies the feeling of accomplishment is a blessing to all youth, leaders and clients ( people served).”
The typical day will begin with breakfast in the Fellowship Hall at First Methodist in Rockmart. After prayer, work teams will go out to fulfill assigned tasks.
These can include painting, building wheelchair ramps and porches, general cleaning and yard work. The assignments are coordinated to include time for the physical job as well as time for sharing and fellowship between team members and those served.
During the week, local youth will also work on the Silver Comet Trail, a popular recreational path that extends across the county.
Organizers emphasize that adult volunteers will accompany youth as they leave for a day of mission work.
Team members will not return to the church after a day of helping others. Teams are asked to arrive at the Rockmart High School by 4 p. m. for showers.
Thereafter, the groups will be shuttled back to First Methodist for a time of recreation, relaxation and fellowship before supper. The evening will include praise and worship, fun activities and a speaker.
