Cedartown softball team heading to Dizzy Dean World Series after winning state title in Rossville

-

Cedartown’s Dizzy Dean 14-and-under softball team is headed to the Dizzy Dean World Series on July 16 after taking the state title this past weekend.

Coach Shane Lee said the team played “Iron Man softball” over the weekend after injuries brought the team’s numbers down to nine, forcing each player to stay on the field through a day of games in Rossville.

“We only had to play three teams, but they were good teams,” he said.

A number of teams decided not to attend the state tournament this year from Dizzy Dean’s seven districts in Georgia, Lee said. That included Cedartown’s district.

“We outscored our opponents 32-5 through the tournament,” he said. “The girls would tie up in the early innings, then take over the lead through the rest of the game.”

He added that the girls “played as a team.”

“They are playing for the name on the front of their shirts, not on the back,” he said.

Lee said the team plans to travel to the World Series, located in Southaven, Miss., in hopes of bringing back the first title in Cedartown history.

He said he believes his girls have a good chance of coming home with the title.

The team is looking for help funding the trip, Lee said. He said all donations are tax deductible and can be made through himself or through the Cedartown Recreation Department. He said to call him at 706-766-6300 or e-mail dslee@lamar.com.

Dizzy Dean, thought of mainly as a baseball organization, added softball to their program eight years ago, Lee said. He said most of Georgia’s recreation department teams continue to play in the Georgia Recreation and Park Association leagues.
