County approves fees, no smoking zones
The Polk County Board of Commissioners has approved new fees for Magistrate Court.
The increase is included in a proposal submitted by Judge Jean Crane:
$100 court cost if an individual requests a trial and are found guilty
$50 when a person applies for a warrant and fails to appear for court
$50 from the bench if an individual has court scheduled and fails to appear
Crane said, in a report to the board, that the fees were to cover additional administrative costs and work involved.
“Most courts do have administration and other fees,” she said.
Commissioners also authorized County Manager Matt Denton to proceed with plans to expand a no smoking zone to 50 feet from the entrance of all county facilities, including the Administrative Building. This would apply to the public as well as county staff.
“We have a place for people to put cigarette butts,” he said. “I often see more on the ground than in the container. This is what greets visitors when they come to county and other offices each day.”
Additionally, Denton said there is frequently a “fog of smoke” at the doors any morning of the week.
Board members also gave the green light to the following agenda items:
A resolution in support of the proposed College Academy on the campuses of Cedartown and Rockmart high schools
