Expanded flea market store opens up in Cedartown

- By MELODY DAREING Staff Writer

People who love flea markets have a new place to peruse.

Edna Bowen rented two rooms from the flea market at the Old Brewster School for a year. Now, she has taken over the gymnasium and her expanded business opened over the weekend.

Edna’s Place in the Gym at 1156 Piedmont Highway is open from Thursdays through Sundays from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Bowen worked at Atlanta Goodwill 50 years ago and said she has always loved thrift stores and flea markets. It has long been her dream to have her very own, she said.

“But I think I have more than a Goodwill,” she said with a a laugh.

Bowen had been selling at the flea market, but also owned a place in Alabama and operated a book store in Cedar Bluff. She closed both down in order to be closer to home after her husband went blind.

Some of the items came from an antique store that shut down after the owner died. More came from people who wanted to rid themselves of good, useable items but didn’t want to have a yard sale.

“They would call me and I’d make an offer and they would accept my offer,” Bowen said.

Her son and daughterin-law also assist in gathering items from people anxious to donate or sell them. They have brought in several truckloads, Bowen said.

There are a lot of baby items in her shop, along with both newer and antique furniture, dishes and other household items, knives, jewelry, and some classic décor pieces. Bowen said what she is most enthusiastic about are her books. There are too many to count.

“I would love for somebody to set up a bookstore in town,” she said. “I’d put them in business with all my books.”
