Mrs. Jo Shanks Merritt, age 79 of Cedartown, passed away on Thursday, July 17, 2014.
Mrs. Merritt was born on Nov. 10, 1934 in Lindale, daughter of the late Albert Roy Coggins and the late Odessa Grimes Coggins.
Losing her father at an early age, she was raised in Rockmart by her mother and step-father, the late Ollie Vivian Jones. She was a 1953 graduate of Rockmart High School, where she formed lifelong friendships resulting in her attendance at many class reunions and classmate socials throughout the years.
For many years she worked in the medical offices of Dr. R. B. Goldin and Dr. Harold Goldin, making her well known in her beloved Rockmart community. Later she worked for Polk County Magistrate Court as an administrative assistant. She retired in 2004 from full-time service, but continued on a part-time basis in the Rockmart office for several additional years.
Mrs. Merritt was a member of the Fairview Baptist Church of Rockmart, but most recently attended the First Baptist Church of Cedartown.
Placing top priority on family throughout her life, she was an exemplary daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. Her family will forever remember her unwavering grace, her generous and loving spirit, and her impeccable sense of personal style. Ironically, although she never learned to swim, her favorite summer pastime was sitting poolside in Georgia or lounging on the beaches of the Gulf Coast, basking in the sunshine.
In addition to her parents and step-father, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Mr. Audie L. Shanks; her siblings, infant sister, Margie Sue Coggins and brothers, Mr. Thomas Walter Jones and Mr. William Kenneth “Buck” Jones.
She was survived by her husband, Ray Merritt of Cedartown; two sons, Lee Shanks and his partner, Kevin Harden of Atlanta and Keith Shanks and his wife Felicia of Rockmart; her siblings, Melvin Jones of Haralson County, Glynn Jones and Lynn Jones Bailey both of Rockmart; grandsons, Benji Shanks and his wife Alexis, Brock Shanks and Braden Shanks; greatgrandson, Oliver Shanks; nieces, nephews, and Grimes family cousins.
Memorial graveside and interment services for Mrs. Merritt were held on Sunday, July 20 4 p.m. in the family lot of Rose Hill Cemetery with Dr. Tony Weaver officiating.
