More than 3,000 vote early for Nov. 4 general election

- From Staff Reports

More than 3,000 votes are ready to be counted from early voters following the end of the period ahead of the Tuesday general election, according to Polk County Elections director Karen Garmon.

Garmon said 2,179 voters cast their ballot early in Cedartown, followed by 1,089 voters in Rockmart.

Some 273 absentee ballots were mailed into the election office by the Oct. 31 deadline, she said.

Now voters will take to the polls starting Tuesday morning at seven polling places across Polk County.

Precincts will open at 7 a.m. and will stay open until 7 p.m. Once the polls are closed, voting machines will be packed up and the computer chips inside will be processed for the vote.

Those polling places voters can go to include the Aragon Municipal Complex, 2814 Rome Highway, Aragon; Pine Bower Baptist Church, 100 Pine Bower Road, Cedartown; the Bert Wood Youth and Athletic Complex, 605 Lynton Drive, Cedartown; Victory Baptist Church, 15 Hendrix Road, Cedartown; Cedar Creek Christian Center at 1890 Rome Highway, Cedartown; the Rockmart Community Center, 436 Hogue Ave. Rockmart; and Young’s Grove Baptist Church, 2255 Antioch Road, Cedartown.

Those who are registered to vote in Polk County will have which precinct they are to report to for casting their ballot. Those who are registered and unsure of where they’re supposed to vote on election day can find out online at sos. ga.gov.

Garmon said the only thing registered voters will need to cast their ballot is a photo ID.

“If they’re not able to come early or to get out on election day, they can call and ask for absentee ballot applications,” she said.

Garmon said she expected a busier early voting session for October than the office previously experienced for past elections, especially for those casting an absentee ballot.

“We’ve gotten a lot of absentees ballot applications this year, mainly because people will be out of town,” she said.

Voters are headed to the polls this November for statewide and local offices, including votes on three Polk County Board of Commissioner seats, two contested Board of Education seats along with three other non-contested seats.

Ballots are also being cast for governor, lieutenant governor and a number of statewide seats, along with a U.S. Senate race to replace Sen. Saxby Chambliss between Michelle Nunn and David Perdue.
