Animal Control numbers for October up from September

- From staff reports

Polk County Animal Control is regaining their adoption and rescue numbers for dogs and cats following a quarantine of the facility in September following a contained outbreak of Parvo in a few dogs.

The facility reported in October the number of dogs adopted out at 24, up from 10 dogs in September. They also found new owners for 10 cats, up from 6 cats in the previous month.

Animal Control took in 124 dogs and 82 cats over that time period, compared to September’s figures of 84 dogs and 87 cats. Only 14 dogs and 8 cats were reclaimed in October, up from September when only 9 dogs and no cats were reclaimed.

Rescue organizations continue to take away many of the dogs and cats who come through Polk County’s animal control facility. In October alone, 86 dogs and 10 cats were taken by groups to find homes for these animals. That was the largest number of dogs taken from the facility by groups for the whole year.

Animal Control reported 26 dogs and 71 cats were euthanized – for both animals that were adoptable and unadoptable – in October. Those figures were up from September as well, when only 25 dogs and 69 cats were euthanized.

Animal Control officers issued 19 citations throughout the month of October, the same as September. The facility colleted $1,160 in fees and added $250 to the adoption fund.

Thus far, that makes nearly $10,000 in fines for the year and $1,992 for the adoption fund. Animal Control officers have issued 246 citations for the year.

From January through October, the number of dogs that have been brought into the facility stands at 1,131. Animal Control also took in 768 cats since the start of 2014.
