Veterans: Defenders of freedom Spirit of patriotism stirred during talk at Rockmart event

- By AGNES HAGIN

A spirit of patriotism was ignited when Joseph Pierce Suttles, WWII Marine, proclaimed, “God bless American, the land that I love,” during a Veteran’s Day program in downtown Rockmart.

Suttles, a Purple Heart recipient, was introduced as an Ohio youth that joined the U.S. Armed Forces. He fought in some of the terrible battles throughout the Pacific, according to Post 12 Commander Vaden Underwood.

However, Suttles chose not to center attention on his accomplishments but in memory of those who died to preserve the country’s freedoms. He talked of the white crosses in countries around the world that tell a story of the fallen who gave all they had for the America he loves.

“This country was founded on the belief of freedom for the oppressed that desired something better for their children and grandchildren,” he said. “This great nation has humble beginnings and a bell that rang out its destiny to all that would become a defender of the liberties we enjoy.”

“God bless America!” he called out as he reminded those present the nation’s flag is more than a symbol. Old Glory, he said, has waved over many battles where the brave shed blood to protect it and their homeland.

He encouraged everyone – young and old – to never forget that the spirit of America is its people.

“We must keep our faith in the promise of our past, preserve it for the present and protect it forever in the future,” he said.

“God bless America!” he called as he concluded his speech to a standing ovation.

Prior to his address, a wreath was placed at the “Killed in Action” monument by Unit 12 Auxiliary President Shelia Brinkley and advancement of colors by Post 12 Legion Riders.

The National Anthem was sung by Rockmart High School Chorus and directed by Craig Godfrey.

Following a rifle salute, the program closed with the playing of “Taps”.
