Our House Fundraiser coming this weekend

This weekend, the sanctuary at Victory Baptist Church will come alive with the sounds of praise to help a Polk County organization continue to provide shelter and resources for victims of domestic violence.

“An Evening of Gospel Singing” will kick off this Saturday, June 11, at 6 p.m. to help raise money for the Our House Women’s Shelter.

Admission for the event is free, but any love offerings from the community will be accepted.

“It’s not just singing, it’s mime, praise dancing and singing,” said Carla Kinslow, who as a board member of Our House is helping organize the event this year.

“We’re trying to represent different cultures in the event,” she said.

Several organizations, including the Cedar Lake Christian Center Praise team, a drama team from Southside Baptist, and several community choirs will provide entertainment at the event, Kinslow said.

Cedartown Police Chief Jamie Newsome will be acting as master of ceremonies for the evening as well.

The ultimate goal for Our House, also known as the Polk County Women’s Shelter, is to raise money to fund operations, including a safe house, and to provide other support to give women and children who have been the victims of domestic violence a fresh start.

“Mainly, we just want people to come out and have a good time and support our cause, which helps so many people in our community every day,” she said.

First conceived in 1994 by a group of dedicated volunteers and local organizations. Our House was started by Rev. Hazel Glover of St. James Episcopal Church, Diane Hall, director of the Samaritan House, attorney Karen Nissen, and Virginia Voll of Murphy-Harpst Children’s Centers. Today Our House has served hundreds of families, operates a 24-hour crisis line, and runs a thrift store.
