Polk’s ASC Relay for Life to be held Saturday, April 30

Polk County Relay for Life will be held from 6 p.m. until midnight Saturday, April 30 at the fairground­s, located off U.S. Highway 278 near Cedartown.

The 2016 Relay Event Leadership Team hosted a “kick-off” for the American Cancer Society (ACS) on Tuesday, Sept. 8 at Victory Baptist Church. A goal of $68,000 has been set.

“The Leadership Team is excited about the theme for 2016,” said Haley Cochran, Community Manager for the South Atlantic Division of ACS. “We are honoring the beloved and talented Dr. Seuss, who, by the way, had oral cancer. Tents and Survivors’ Dinner will be decorated with the following theme: one wish, two wish, I wish, you wish, for a cure.

Relay For Life is held to bring communitie­s together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against a disease that has already taken too much. The funds you raise truly make a difference in the fight against cancer.

d. their loved ones, 24 hours a ay, 7 days a week

Hope Lodges® that offer free overnight lodging to cancer patients and their caregivers who ho. have to travel away from me for treatment

On April 30, Cancer Survivors will be invited to a free celebrator­y dinner in the Exhibit Hall at the fairground­s. Survivors and their Caregivers can share and celebrate, win door prizes and participat­e - as a group - in the “Victory Lap” around the track.

They are cheered on by Relay teams who applaud their victory over cancer and show gratitude for support given by Caregivers.

The Event Leadership Team for Polk County are: Terry Singleton – missions fundraisin­g; Regina Gentry – People Support and Dondra Crawford – Day of Event support. This is a new organizati­on chart, launched in 2015, to spread responsibi­lity beyond two or more people and each has a branch of committees.

The new Team Ambassador program was begun last year. These individual­s are asked to mentor and encourage teams as a liaison for the co-chairs and ACS.

The 2016 Ambassador­s are: Kara Lawrence – School Teams; Tammy Jarrell – Business Teams and Nancy Wright – Friends/Family/ Church Teams.

Anyone interested in joining the Event Leadership Team is invited to attend the next Leadership Team meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2015 at Sidekicks Restaurant in Rockmart. The next Team Captains meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20 at Victory Baptist Church.
