Historical Society plans fall meeting

- From Staff Reports

The Polk County Historical Society will hold its annual picnic/ fundraiser at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 29, in the garden behind the Museum at 205 S. College Street in Cedartown.

The garden surrounds the 19th century fountain given to the city of Charles Adamson and Col. William Barton, developers of the Cedartown Electric Light and Water Co. at the Big Spring. The fountain, which, due to expense, does not run all the time, will be flowing for the event.

According to PCHS president Ellen Hester, the get-together will feature music provided by a few “pickers and grinners.” The menu will offer pulled pork, shrimp and grits, “fake” baked potatoes, and tea or water, topped off with a choice of home-baked desserts.

In addition to members, the event is open to the public and anyone interested in joining the historical society. Tickets are $11 and are available at the Museum during the expanded hours of 1:30 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Tickets can also be reserved by calling Greg Gray at 770-7485657 and then paying for the tickets at the picnic. Anyone who plans on coming and cannot make it by the Museum to purchase a ticket are encouraged to reserve a ticket so the event committee will be sure to prepare enough food. Tickets can also be purchased at the museum the day of the event.

PCHS members are encouraged to consider volunteering as docents to work 2-4 hour shifts, in teams of two, on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Friday and Saturdays. “The goal is to be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. -- 5 p.m. if possible -each day,” Hester said.

The historical society meets at 7 p.m. downstairs at the museum on the last Tuesday of every month, except July, August, and December. The September 29 program will be the first following the summer break. Programs over the past year have included a presentation of Civil War era music, a discussion on historic arts by Winnie Morrow, and a program on Chubbtown by Clemmie Watley.
