Lady Bulldogs, Jackets go 2-2 in tournament play over the weekend

Lady Jackets finding mixed results on the road, Cedartown winning streak snapped at six

- From Staff Reports

The battles on the softball diamond continue for Cedartown and Rockmart after a short break over the Labor Day weekend holiday, and both teams got to mix it up on tournament play heading back into region play this week.

The Rockmart Lady Jackets started off last week with an 11-10 loss to Pepperell on the road.

Baylee Wright got a hit up the middle in the bottom of the seventh to score Grace Hufford and give the Lady Dragons a wild Region 6-AAA win at home.

With Rockmart holding onto a 5-4 lead in the sixth, Pepperell scored six in the bottom of the frame to take a 10-5 lead.

The Lady Jackets (9-5, 2-3) came back and posted five runs in the top of the seventh to tie it up. The go-ahead run was at third with two outs when Pepperell caught an infield pop-up to end the at-bat.

Hufford then led off with a single, followed by Kaylee Mansell’s sacrifice bunt to put Hufford in scoring position.

Pepperell was led by Daylee McGraw’s three hits while Wright pitched a complete game and struck out four. Rockmart’s Emily Loveless had three hits as well, and pitcher Savannah Sewell had seven strikeouts.

Rockmart followed that up with weekend tournament play, falling 1-0 to Armuchee on Friday but making up for their recent losses taking 2 out of 3 in a 14-2 win over Armuchee and a 9-1 win over Coosa on Saturday. The Lady Jackets dropped their third game against Coahulla Creek 4-3.

The Cedartown Lady Bulldogs had much better luck last week and over the weekend. They extended their winning streak to six games following a Sept. 10 win over Haralson County 40, and a Friday win over Campbell 13-0 in their tournament play. The Lady Bulldogs saw the streak snapped when facing Sprayberry later on in the evening in a 43 loss, but recovered for two more wins over the weekend.

Cedartown first took an early morning 2-0 win over North Cobb, which was followed by a loss in the next game 7-1.

The Lady Bulldogs finished off tournament play in an 8-0 win over Kell.

Next up for Cedartown is a trip to Carrollton to play Central on Tuesday after press time, and a Thursday home game against Callaway.

Rockmart continues region play on Tuesday following press time hosting Haralson, followeding by a trip to Carrolton on Thursday for their game against Central.

Both Cedartown and Rockmart will be back on the field against one another on Sept. 22, with the Lady Bulldogs hosting the region rivalry matchup.
