Weather forces Model to wait to finish game against Bremen

- By JEREMY STEWART RN-T Sports Editor

A game that spanned two days was decided by one quarter Saturday night as Model scored 21 unanswered points in the third and defeated Bremen, 42-30.

Played in Shannon, the game was halted in the second quarter Friday night due to lightning and continued Saturday.

Once the game was finally completed, Model sat at 4-0 to start the season for the sec- ond year in a row.

“We were at this spot last year, so we’re just going to challenge the kids to keep going,” Model head coach Gordon Powers said.

Model quarterback Kyler Eldridge was 6 of 10 for 149 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 119 yards and another two scores on 18 carries.

Running back Chris Dublin ran for 112 yards and a touchdown for Model, while tallying 83 yards receiving, includ- ing a 32-yard touchdown reception on secondand-18 in the eventful third quarter.

“It was on tonight,” Powers said about his backfield tandem. “What they do is build the enthusiasm and make the line block better. Our line was coming off of the ball better. Our receivers blocked better in the second half.”

Bremen was behind 14-11 at the beginning of Saturday’s restart and came on strong, turning its second possession of the night into a 14-play, 91-yard drive that was capped off by a 9-yard run by Chipper Taylor with just 50 seconds left in the first half.

Model (4-0) was unable to convert on fourth-and11 on its next possession, and Bremen went into the locker room up 18-14.

“We challenged our kids at halftime and, in fact, the kids challenged themselves,” Powers said.

“Some of our players challenged the rest of the team because that’s just unacceptable for our defense to give up a tough drive like that.”

DJ McBrayer led Bremen with 108 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries in the complete game. Quarterback Dylan Kierbow was 8 of 15 for 96 yards and a score.

Patrick Pollard had two fumble recoveries, the last of which he ran back 65 yards for a touchdown with 3:15 left in the game.

The home team came out of halftime with a new burst of energy as Model moved into a faster tempo on offense and scored on an 80-yard drive in just under three minutes.

Eldridge became the driving force, rushing for 57 yards in the drive, including pushing through the Bremen defense on fourth-and-1 and scoring on a 12-yard run.
