Team effort leads to win for Pepperell

- From Staff Reports

Between his running backs moving the ball, the offensive line working together, and the defense holding Chestatee High to a touchdown in the first three quarters, Pepperell coach Rick Hurst had a lot to be proud of in the Dragons’ win Friday night.

Quarterback Trevor Thomas threw for 149 yards and two touchdowns, and also ran for 64 yards and another score as Pepperell traveled to Gainesville and defeated the War Eagles, 43-22.

“Anytime you get a win it’s great,” Hurst said. “We did some very good things offensively and we ran very efficiently tonight to be able to move up and down the field.”

Devyn Collins had 161 yards on 15 carries, including a 48-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Tae Hammond racked up 89 yards on nine carries, one of the last of which was a 47-yard touchdown in the fourth.

“The offensive line did extremely well giving us a chance to extend the play,” Hurst said. “There was a lot of unselfish play out there tonight.”

Scoring began with a 20yard pass from Thomas to TJ Watkins in the first quarter.

Thomas then covered 35 yards on a touchdown run in the second quarter. Hunter Chastain ran in the two-point conversion to make it 22-7 at the half.

In the third quarter, Chastain broke off a 20yard run for six points, and Thomas hit Parker Gailey for a 47-yard touchdown pass to extend Pepperell’s lead to 36-7 heading into the final period.

Pepperell ( 2- 1) faces Chattooga (3-0) next Friday in Lindale for homecoming before hosting Coosa the week after.

“Our next two games will be a challenge, but I think it’ll be a good test before we get into region play,” Hurst said. “We have some things we have to fix on both sides of the ball.”
