Brandy Smith, founder of Mending Hearts, Inc., said the organization was launched in January 2014 when the decision was made to provide clothing for families that lost homes due to fire. Later, help was given to families in sudden need due to circumstances such as divorce, death, job loss or other tragedy.

“We have provided clothing, shoes, jackets, small household items and food to over 30 families in Polk, Paulding, Cobb and Floyd Counties,” Smith said. “In one year, we have grown to include 10 volunteers and 4 storage locations. We are seeking to build relationships with other organizations that are reaching out to the community.”

Currently, Mending Hearts provides clean, gently worn clothing and shoes of all sizes, linens, toiletries, small household items, baby gear, books, some home decor and even toys.

Smith said plans are to locate a building in the Rockmart area to occupy for temporary shelter, food, clothing and job placement for people who are in need.

Collier Gray, son of Jennifer Stephens and Chandler Gray and grandson of Troy and Karen Smith of Rockmart, is recovering from a massive stroke.

For a period of time, Collier’s family wasn’t sure he was going to live. If he did live, they did not know if he’d even wake up from the medically induced coma he was under for weeks.

Family members report that he did live and wake up, but his healing is in the “hands of God and the incredible doctors and nurses”. Collier is now on a very long road to recovery.

“There is hope,” said Haley Morgan Smith, his aunt. “We are grateful Collier is still here. We don’t focus on the negative but the positive and believe that God can do all things, including a miracle recovery.”
