EVHS continues restoration project

-

Greg Gray, president, gave a report at the October meeting of the Euharlee Valley Historical Society (EVHS) on ways the members can participate in community events. They discussed being a part of Rockmart events, including festivals that would allow them to support and be a part of “local happenings”.

Gray said he recently met with Steve Miller, Rockmart mayor, and Jeff Ellis, city manager, explaining programs and goals of EVHS.

The historical society continues restoration of historic Van Wert Church and recently installed a set of new doors with the second planned. Current repairs include siding and other work to keep the building maintained.

A report was given detailing how donations continue to make repairs possible. Among those who have given of time and money are the Boy Scouts and Ray Hughes.

Gray gave an overview of the recent Memorial Service. He mentioned the 2015 crowd was smaller due to inclement weather and that the service was held inside the church.

Included in his report was the fact that Sgt. Joseph Dyer’s opening remarks and Detective Jason Smith’s trumpet music was well received. Guests were invited out- side for the reading of the names of the servicemen and laying of a rose by the ladies of the Confederate re-enactors group.

The group expressed appreciation to Earl Smith, manager of Triangle in Rockmart. Smith donated apples to the list of refreshments.

“We wish to thank each one for donations and support for our programs,” Gray said.

The next EVHS meeting will be held in the historic Van Wert Church at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30. Visitors are welcome to attend.
