Kiwanis Club’s Wood and Kadner buy books for club donation

-

Cedartown Kiwanis members have started a new initiative that will honor the club’s special visitors and also promote the importance of reading at the same time.

The Cedartown Kiwanis Club meets every Friday at noon at the Cherokee Country Club. As part of their weekly meeting, the club invites a special guest to address the group on local topics of interest. Speakers range from elected officials and community volunteers to state representatives and local law enforcement officers.

Dorothy Wood, a longtime club member, and Tori Kadner, the Kiwanis Club’s newest member, recently purchased dozens of children’s books for this initiative. After each meeting, the club will dedicate a book in honor of their weekly special guest. The guest’s name and date of speaking engagement will appear on a customized Cedartown Kiwanis label that will be placed on the book’s inside cover. Books will then be presented to different agencies and organizations around Cedartown that serve children and youth.

The Cedartown Kiwanis Club was established in 1920, just four years after Kiwanis International was first organized in Detroit, Michigan, on Jan. 21, 1915. The club has a long and proud tradition of extensive service to the local community. They sponsor and present the Jack Lopez Scholarship each year to a senior student who excels in academic studies and demonstrates good citizenship. They also sponsor a health fair every year for schoolage children and Club members oversee the flag project – a program which ensures the display of American flags in the downtown area on federal holidays. The Cedartown Kiwanis Club also hosts the Key Club at Cedartown High School as well as other community projects relating to youth.
