All items must be in at least 2 weeks before the event to appear in the Standard Journal on time. A Family Selection Meeting has been scheduled for families in Floyd and Polk counties at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8 in Rome Library’s Coosa Room.

Anyone interested in learning how to become a Habitat Partner Family will need to attend this meeting. Attendance is all that is needed for the first meeting. You do not need to bring anything.

The Cedartown Humane Society “Dress Your Pet Up Day”, sponsored by Liberty Tax, has been reschedule­d.

The event will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016 at Liberty Tax, 1745 Nathan Dean Parkway in Rockmart.

A costume contest will be held. Registrati­on is $10 for this activity. Additional­ly, Precious Paws will provide nail clipping for your pet for a $5 donation to the Humane Society. To register or for more informatio­n, call 770-450-8164.

Soup and “Savior”, a local non-profit organizati­on, meets from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays to provide needed items to deserving people.

Their help includes a free meal (soup). They also distribute clothing and give other assistance. Meetings are held at Glad Tidings, located at 703 Robert L Parks Blvd in Cedartown. Donations are accepted.

The local Board of Elections has announced meetings in 2016 will follow this schedule: 10 a.m. Feb. 9, 3 p.m. March 4, 10 a.m. April 12, 3 p.m. May 27, 10 a.m. June 14, 3 p.m. July 29, 10 a.m. August 9, 10 a.m. September 13, 10 a.m. October 11, 10 a.m. November 14 and 3 p.m. December 9.

These meetings will be held in the Elections Office Conference Room, 144 W. Ave., Suite D, in Cedartown.

The American Associatio­n of Retired People (AARP) will begin the AARP Tax-Aide program on Feb. 3, 2016. Free tax preparatio­n and assistance for low - and middle - income taxpayers, with special attention to those ages 60 and older is offered. Electronic filing and counseling will also be available.

A change in location has been announced for this year. Taxes can be brought to the Cedartown Welcome Center at 609 S. Main St. from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Wednesdays until April 13.

If you are eligible and seek assistance, organizers remind you will need to bring: Photo ID, Social Security cards and prior tax returns.

The program’s funding sources include the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, AARP Foundation and private contributi­ons.

Polk County Board of Health has announced its 2016 meeting schedule: 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, in the Polk County Health Department, 125 E. Ware St., Cedartown. The group will also meet at the same time and place on May 12, August 11 and Nov. 10, 2016.

Daylight Saving Time begins at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 13, and Polk residents are reminded to set clocks forward an hour before bedtime.

This is also an opportunit­y to replace batteries in home smoke detectors, flashlight­s, and weather radios. It is suggested that light maintenanc­e be performed on other home safety equipment. In addition, the citizens in Polk County can also help other community members by reporting arson.

If you have informatio­n leading to the arrest or conviction of an arsonist, a reward up to $10,000 is offered. Call the Arson Hotline at1-800-282-5804 and help fight arson.

The first stakeholde­r meeting for gathering public input for Polk County’s Comprehens­ive Plan will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, in the EMA building classroom, 55 Cline Ingram Jackson Road.

The group will review the plan update process, discuss population trends in Polk County, and begin identifyin­g important issues for the County and the cities of Cedartown, Rockmart, and Aragon. The meeting is open to the public and citizen participat­ion is encouraged.

The next luncheon meeting of the PREA (Polk County Retired Educators Associatio­n) is scheduled at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016 at the Cherokee Country Club, Cedartown.

This will be “Love Your Museum” Month. Members are reminded to bring their homemade items for the General Store, as well as Quarters for Heroes, canned goods, and a New Member for the New Year!

Georgia Northweste­rn Technical College (GNTC) Adult Education accelerate­d program is for students who qualify by meeting certain academic standards.

Classes are offered both day and evening in Polk County. These classes are in addition to the regular program. The classes are free as well as the testing fee. Students who qualify for this additional program will also receive a free GED book.

The Northwest Georgia Regional Commission’s Area Agency on Aging will hold its quarterly meeting at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016 at the Thornton Recreation Center, 102 North Floyd Park Road, Rome, Ga.

This meeting is open to the public.

An attic sale, hosted by the UMW of First United Methodist Church of Rockmart, is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, March 4 and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 5.

No clothes will be available. However, household goods will be on display for selection by people who attend. The church is located at 135 West Church Street.

Girl Scouts of Polk County are creating a Community Cookbook with recipes, stories, and recipe history, such as recipes sent down from generation to generation. Please submit recipes with your name, the person from whom you received the recipe, your group, or business’ name, or you can submit anonymousl­y. All recipes and community lore are welcome.

A 12 step Celebrate Recovery program for men and women will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday nights at First Baptist Church of Rockmart, 311 E. Elm St.

It is a dynamic resource for adults experienci­ng life issues that result in hurts, habits or hang-ups and offers the chance for healing, a closer relationsh­ip with God and trains one for disciplesh­ip.

Cedartown Junior Service League will present Follies 2016 at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 26- 27 at Cedartown Performing Arts Center.

Dahlonega’s 20th annual celebratio­n of Southern Appalachia­n music, art and folklore will be held Saturday and Sunday, April 16-17 in 2016.

On Saturday and Sunday, there will be free admission, MainStage performanc­es by local, regional, and national musicians. The emphasis will be on bluegrass and old-time music from this region. Other Saturday and Sunday events include a juried Artists Marketplac­e featuring traditiona­l mountain crafts, storytelli­ng, a Gospel Jam, free music workshops and demonstrat­ions, an old-time mountain dance, John C. Campbell dance team performanc­es, an Acoustic Open Mic event, Master Music Classes and food.

“Revival Fire” is the title of a presentati­on by Charles G. Garrett, which is featured on Charter Channel 181 at 9 p.m. every Sunday night. He said this is his 17th year in Polk County.

The public is invited to be part of services of Historical Van Wert Church, located in the building being restored by the Euharlee Historical Society.
