Adams leads Shorter to third straight victory with UAH win

Taylor Adams helped the Shorter women’s basketball team take the lead for the final time with 2:05 to go in the third period.

Shorter never looked back as it defeated the Alabama-Huntsville Lady Chargers 66-58. The team is riding a three-game winning streak. UAH (11-10, 8-9) led almost the entire first half. The Chargers led by as many as eight points at multiple points during the first two periods. Down by eight with 5:35 left in the second, Shorter (15-6, 12-5) slowly chipped away at Alabama-Huntsville’s lead.

A pair of free throws by Taylor Adams, followed by a Shaundrick­a Mann layup, tied the game at 23. With 12 seconds left before halftime, Mann scored her 12th point to give Lady Hawks its first lead, 2523. Jackie Hudson forced turnover, allowing Shorter to maintain a two-point halftime advantage.

Coming out the half the Lady Hawks clung to a slim advantage. The lead swapped teams four times in the second half with Shorter taking the lead for good at the 2:05 mark of the third period. Two free throws from Adams gave the Lady Hawks a two-point lead. Shorter led by six at the end of the period after Hudson converted a layup with under 30 seconds remaining.

In the fourth, the game remained close for the majority of the quarter. The Lady Hawks led by four, 59-55 with 3:50 remaining, before closing the game on a 7-3 run. Senior Madison Rice sparked the run by scoring four of her nine points over the final minutes.

Adams led the Lady Hawks with 14 points, including 12 in the second half. She grabbed game-high eight rebounds. Mann followed with 12 points, all in the first half. Rice added nine, while Shakierya McClendon had eight. Baylee Johnson led Alabama Huntsville with 24 points.

Shorter will next host West Georgia for a Gulf South Conference matchup at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
