Rockmart, Cedartown getting baseball seasons underway at home and away
Cedartown and Rockmart take to the ball field, travel to Darlington over the weekend.
Pitching and smart at-bats led Rockmart past Darlington as the visiting Yellow Jackets picked up a 2-0 non-region win over the Tigers to open their season.
Kole Holder got the win on the mound as he and teammate Chet Miller worked to keep Darlington scoreless and give first-year Rockmart coach
Kenny Yanzetich his first win as the Jackets’ skipper.
“The pitching was outstanding. Kole worked ahead in the count all day, I think he had maybe one or two three ball counts,” Yanzetich said. “Chet over his four years has done nothing but go in and throw strikes for us and work the count. But we also had good defense behind those guys today.”
Rockmart (1-1) opened the scoring in the top of the second when Darlington pitcher Jake Womack gave up a bases-loaded walk with two outs.
The Jackets picked up their second run in the sixth when Dawson Sanders hit a two-out RBI double off of the Tigers’ Sam Hunt to bring in Cam Jones.
“We’ve done a good job of working on hitting the ball the other way, and we got some hits the other way that allowed us to be aggressive on the base pads,” Yanzetich said.
Miller — who came in to finish the game in the sixth inning — retired the sides in the sixth and seventh without drama. Darlington brought in Nolan Wilson in the seventh. He retired the side with a pair of infield grounders and a pop fly to right field.
Yanzetich, who was previously at Lanier County, said he was happy with his first win with the Jackets.
“I’m excited,” he said. “I told the boys after the game I appreciated my first win at Rockmart and hopefully we’ll have a few more before it’s over with this year.”
Over the weekend, the Cedartown Bulldogs got their second game of the season under their belts.
The Bulldogs came to visit the Tigers and ended up dropping a 3-0 shutout on the road.
Darlington scored their first run in the bottom of the first, then added two more in the bottom of the third and fourth innings and were able to hold of the Bulldog offense through the top of the seventh and closed out the game.
The Bulldogs were set to host Model in a makeup contest Monday after press time, but the game was called off due to wet weather. Cedartown’s coming schedule included a Tuesday and Friday home stand against Darlington and Chattooga, followed by a Saturday game at Arabia Mountain and a March 1 game at home hosting Bremen.
Rockmart’s upcoming schedule includes a Friday away game at Tattnall County in Reidsville, a Saturday away game at Claxton High School, and a March 1 away game at Paulding County. The Jackets will host Paulding on March 2 for their first return home.
