Aragon election now includes Burrus council seat in November

- By KEVIN MYRICK Editor

It’s official: Aragon now has three open seats in the coming November election.

The council seat held by Curtis Burrus before he was made mayor for the rest of the year is coming open again just a year after he was re-elected to the seat without opposition.

A qualification period is opening up from Aug. 22 through Aug. 24, with those

interested meeting the guidelines available at Aragon’s city hall, and turning in paperwork with the $36 fee to the Polk County Board of Elections office in Cedartown at 144 West Ave.

Those interested in running have from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 22 and 23 to get into the race, and from 9 a.m. to noon on Aug. 24.

Burrus had to give up the seat in his run for Mayor of Aragon against local resident and Aragon Residents for Community Improvement organizer Melisa Hughes. Burrus and Hughes are running for the seat that was opened for a special election after Mayor Brenda Gazaway died in June.

Gazaway had just been elected to a new term as mayor in November 2015 after former Mayor Ken Suffridge decided not to run for a new term last year.

This came right as council member Kevin Prewett announced he and his family had bought a new home in Cartersville, giving up his seat and requiring a special election to be held.

Former council member Hunter Spinks qualified previously to take up the spot left open by Prewett. Spinks gave up his seat in the November 2015 election to allow Tammy Mulkey to come onto the board.

The Aragon City Council met on Aug. 10 in a special called meeting with only councilmembers Duel Mitchell and Mulkey in attendance.

Enough for a quorum, the pair agreed without any comment to open the seat for the coming election, they adjourned the meeting after only being open for a few minutes.

The deadline for Aragon to have gotten the seat onto the ballot was noon on Aug. 10 according to Polk County Elections Director Karen Garmon.
