Brown- Wright Rockmart American Legion Post 12 is hosting a softball tournament benefiting Operation Comfort Warriors at the Rockmart Senior League Field on Aug. 20, 2016.

The tournament will be an all day event and the public is invited to register a team, donate items for the tournament, purchase a sponsorshi­p or volunteer.

Operation Comfort Warriors provides items and activities to recovering wounded servicemen and women and is supported by 100% donations. Food tickets and t-shirts are also available.

Stop by the post after 4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Friday and Saturdays to pick up forms.

The Highland Rivers Health Governing Board of Directors will meet at 10: 30 a. m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2016 in the Home Again Program located at 419 North Wall Street, Calhoun. The Finance and Corporate Compliance Committees will meet at 9:30 a.m.

The annual Veterans Memorial Service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8 at historic Van Wert Church and Cemetery, located at 100 Church St. in Van Wert near Rockmart.

The Euharlee Valley Historical Society uses re-enactors to pay tribute to the many military veterans who were laid to rest in the church cemetery. In addition to Civil War-era graves, the cemetery also is the final resting place of veterans of the first and second world wars and other conflicts.

The State of Community Address will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 25, 2016 at The Oakwood Room, 316 Main St., Cedartown.

Downtown Cedartown Trick or Treat will be held from 3 to 5:30 p.m. October 31, 2016. The costume contest will begin at 5:30 p.m. in front of Courthouse No. 2.

A revival will be held through Aug. 19 at Euharlee Baptist Church, located at 89 Hixville Rd. in Aragon. Everyone is invited to attend.

Southside Baptist Church, 409 Cobb Street, Cedartown, will host a kickoff for the church’s Awana program at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17.

All children and youth are invited. Bro. Ryan McElheney is the youth minister.

The church will also show the movie “War Room” during evening worship at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28.

Pastor Joel A. Smith invites the public to attend. A class – the War Room: Battle Plan for Prayer – will begin on Wednesday, Aug. 31.

Keep Polk Beautiful ( KPB) presents Rivers Alive from 9 to 12 Saturday, Sept. 24 at Seaborn Jones Park in Rockmart.

Help clean and protect the streams in Polk County. Free Tshirts will be distribute­d to the first 150 volunteers. Breakfast will be served to the volunteers.

Rockmart Second Baptist Church, located at 112 S. Piedmont Ave., Rockmart, will host homecoming beginning at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 21.

Special singers will be Song of Grace. Lunch will be served and everyone is invited to attend.

The Women’s Auxiliary of the North Georgia General Missionary Baptist Associatio­n “Women’s Revival 2016” will be held at 7 p.m. August 17 - 19, at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 17 E Pennington Avenue, Rome.

The guest speakers will be Elder Karen McReynolds­Brabson, New Beginnings A.M.E. Zion Church, Chattanoog­a, Dr. Joann Crowder, Galilee Baptist Church, Cedartown and Evangelist Bernita Smith, Thankful Baptist Church, Rome.

The annual Polk County Fair is scheduled from Sept. 13 through Sept. 18, 2016.

Activities will be held at the Polk County Fairground­s near Cedartown.

Hours are from 5 to 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 5 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

The public is invited to take an exclusive guide through downtown Romes to view places to live, work and play at 3 p.m. September 24.

The monthly spaghetti dinner at Brown-Wright American Legion Post 12 in Rockmart will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17 (today).

The menu will include spaghetti, meatballs, garlic toast and salad. You will get all you can eat for $5. The invitation is “bring some friends for a great dinner.”

Georgia Rails into Trails (GRITS) will host a Labor Day Bike Ride on Monday, Sept. 5. The event will start at the Cedartown Welcome Center. Go online at silver-comet-trail.org for registrati­on forms and event informatio­n.

The 39th annual Fall Festival will be held in Downtown Cedartown from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 1, 2016.

The Kiwanis 5K begins at 8 a.m. at the Welcome Center on the Silver Comet Trail. The Shriner’s Parade starts at 10 a.m. and the Cedartown Humane Society Dog Show begins at 11 a.m. in front of the park at the corner of Main and East Ware Street.

There will be many art and craft vendors to shop with and a variety of food vendors to choose from. The local merchants will be open, as well.

A flea market is scheduled at the Cedartown First United Methodist Church from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2 and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3.

Available for purchase will be house wares, furniture, and clothes for men, women and children, toys and books. Mark your calendars for getting good buys during this 42nd annual event.

The Possum Pickin’ on Saturday, August 20 on Head Avenue in Tallapoosa will feature bluegrass and country music from two great bands.

Starting at 7 p.m. (ET) with bluegrass music from Luther’s Mountain, followed by local favorite Jeffery Hulsey & The Rusty Rockers at 8 p.m. (ET). Julie Cain will be special guest emcee for the show. Bring a lawn or folding chair and join in a night of music.

There is no cover charge but an offering will be accepted. Concession­s will be available from the Tallapoosa Downtown Developmen­t Authority (Tallapoosa DDA). Everyone is invited to attend this family friendly, free and fun event.

The Northwest Georgia Regional Commission’s Area Agency On Aging will hold its quarterly meeting Tuesday, August 23, at Thornton Recreation Center, 102 North Floyd Park Road in Rome across from Armuchee High School on Highway 27 North. The meeting begins at 10 a.m. and is open to the public.

The local vegetable market opened at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 28, 2016 in Peek Park in Cedartown. The market will be open from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. Tuesday and Friday or until the vegetables is sold.

The local Board of Elections has announced meetings in 2016 will follow this schedule: 10 a.m. September 13, 10 a.m. October 11, 10 a.m. November 14 and 3 p.m. December 9.

These meetings will be held in the Elections Office Conference Room, 144 W. Ave., Suite D, in Cedartown.

Celebrate Recovery continues to meet in the First Baptist Church of Rockmart, 311 E. Elm St., Monday nights with dinner at 6 p.m. A large group gathers at 7 p.m. and small share group at 8:00 p.m.

Polk County Board of Health has announced its 2016 meeting schedule in the Polk County Health Department, 125 E. Ware St., Cedartown: Nov. 10, 2016.

The 100 Black Men of RomeNorthw­est Georgia’s 15th annual Health Initiative for men and women will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, August 20 at the Floyd County Health Department, 16 E. 12th St.

The event is free and offers vision checks, diabetes screenings, cholestero­l checks, skin cancer screenings, nodular neck exams, prostate cancer screenings, stroke and blood pressure checks, HIV screenings, dental exams, foot and wound care and colorectal cancer screenings.

Prizes will be available and children also are welcome to attend.

Polk / Haralson Christian Life Center (Camp Antioch) continues a summer of events for adults and children.

Soup and “Savior”, a local non-profit organizati­on, meets from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays to provide needed items to deserving people.

This includes a free meal ( soup), clothing and gives other assistance. Meetings are held at Glad Tidings, located at 703 Robert L Parks Blvd in Cedartown. Donations are accepted.

“Revival Fire” is the title of a presentati­on by Charles G. Garrett, which is featured on Charter Channel 181 at 9 p.m. every Sunday night. He said this is his 17th year in Polk County.
