Sea­sonal prod­ucts at farm­ers mar­ket

Septem­ber brings a change in the sea­son as leaf color be­gins to ap­pear in Polk and sur­round­ing area.

It also brings op­por­tu­nity to shop for sea­sonal fruits and veg­eta­bles from lo­cal farm­ers: toma­toes, okra, green beans, long beans and pur­ple hull peas; along with sweet pota­toes, pep­pers, egg­plant and corn. Look for many va­ri­eties of squashes at the mar­ket this week, in­clud­ing crooked neck, but­ter­nut and spaghetti squash!

Ven­dors are of­fer­ing ap­ples, pears, peaches, figs, Mus­cadines and grapes. These are per­fect for bak­ing, pre­serv­ing, or en­joy­ing im­me­di­ately! Ad­di­tion­ally, you can find lo­cal honey, home­made jams and jel­lies, canned goods, lo­cally roasted cof­fee and farm fresh eggs!

Re­mem­ber to sup­port lo­cal meat ven­dors, in­clud­ing grass fed lamb and beef, and pas­ture raised pork and chicken.

Stop by the Com­mu­nity Booth spon­sored by Polk Med­i­cal Cen­ter and check out in-sea­son recipes and in­for­ma­tion re­gard­ing the new­est cook­ing classes.

Don’t for­get to mark your cal­en­dars for the Farm-To-You BBQ hap­pen­ing at the mar­ket on Septem­ber 22. You won’t want to miss it. Lo­cal pork, field peas, and col­lard greens along with cob­bler and tea will be on the menu. Plates will be $12-$15 and avail­able while sup­plies last. Plates can also be pre-paid and guar­an­teed for pick-up.
