Rock­mart grad­u­ate killed, one in­jured in wreck on Hwy. 278

A Rock­mart teen is dead and an­other man was treated and re­leased from Floyd Med­i­cal Cen­ter fol­low­ing a two car wreck on High­way 278 in Polk County on the night of Oct. 19.

Ac­cord­ing to Polk County Deputy Coro­ner Marty Robin­son, Stephen Aubrey Clay, 18, of a Knight Road ad­dress in Rock­mart, was pro­nounced dead on the scene from in­juries sus­tained in the wreck.

Timmy Ray, 33, was also in­jured in the wreck but was treated and re­leased from Floyd Med­i­cal Cen­ter dur­ing the overnight hours.

Ac­cord­ing to in­for­ma­tion from the Ge­or­gia State Pa­trol's Pub­lic In­for­ma­tion Of­fice, the wreck took place around 10 p.m. on High­way 278 at McCowan Road.

The crash be­tween a 1995 Chevro­let Lu­mina and a 2010 Nis­san Fron­tier hap­pened after Clay, the driver of the Lu­mina, failed to main­tain their lane, over cor­rected and trav­eled across the me­dian into the west­bound lane.

The Lu­mina was the struck in the front driver's side by the Fron­tier, driven by Ray, which caused it to spin and even­tu­ally came to rest in the after the rear of the car seper­ated from the front. The Fron­tier also spun and ex­ited the south shoul­der.

The pub­lic in­for­ma­tion of­fice said the in­ves­ti­ga­tion into the wreck was closed.
