Rockmart graduate killed, one injured in wreck on Hwy. 278
A Rockmart teen is dead and another man was treated and released from Floyd Medical Center following a two car wreck on Highway 278 in Polk County on the night of Oct. 19.
According to Polk County Deputy Coroner Marty Robinson, Stephen Aubrey Clay, 18, of a Knight Road address in Rockmart, was pronounced dead on the scene from injuries sustained in the wreck.
Timmy Ray, 33, was also injured in the wreck but was treated and released from Floyd Medical Center during the overnight hours.
According to information from the Georgia State Patrol's Public Information Office, the wreck took place around 10 p.m. on Highway 278 at McCowan Road.
The crash between a 1995 Chevrolet Lumina and a 2010 Nissan Frontier happened after Clay, the driver of the Lumina, failed to maintain their lane, over corrected and traveled across the median into the westbound lane.
The Lumina was the struck in the front driver's side by the Frontier, driven by Ray, which caused it to spin and eventually came to rest in the after the rear of the car seperated from the front. The Frontier also spun and exited the south shoulder.
The public information office said the investigation into the wreck was closed.
