Po­lice scan 117 mil­lion driver’s li­cense photos for face recog­ni­tion data­base

At least 26 states al­low their law en­force­ment agen­cies to run face recog­ni­tion searches against eir driver's li­cense data­bases, while many law en­force­ment agen­cies are us­ing soft­ware to scan images cap­tured by ATM cam­eras and other sur­veil­lance de­vices.

Only one agency, Ohio's Bureau of Crim­i­nal In­ves­ti­ga­tion, has a pol­icy in place to pre­vent its of­fi­cers from us­ing the soft­ware to track re­li­gious, po­lit­i­cal or other free speech ac­tiv­i­ties.
